Halfords Professional Storage Range, Any Good?

Recommended Posts

Stevo309

I've decided to get organised for 2011! Halfords have 1/3 off their metal storage at the moment and having been down and had a look the professional range with rollerbearing drawers etc look and feel pretty good. Wondered if anyone can back this up or suggest an alternative (similar price).

The link above is for the 5 drawer trolley base and i would probably go for the 4 drawer intermediate section on top and then the 7 draw top cabinet.

I have Snap On Steve as you know, you might pay perhaps double now for second hand Snap On in good condition, however as long as you look after it, it retains its value if you were ever to wish to sell it on in years to come. The same cannot be said for the Halfords gear. I hate losing all the value of things I buy hence I have what I have.

I've just bought the Halfords black Industrial 6 drawer chest and 6 drawer top box and its spot on!

I took advantage of the 1/3 off offer as well

Runners are very smooth and its very well put together, even with a draw full of heavy hammers the draw slides out effortlessly with one finger

Recommended!

edit> on Fleabay at the minute theres the same setup i just bought for £200(birmingham) with a couple of days left to go

i agree with tom

speak to your local snap on guy, to see if he can help.

i believe they have they're own auctions to buy new but slightly 'shop soiled' tool boxes

i bought my set up about 8 years ago for £600 (retail £1800). the reason was, there was a little dent in the corner by one of the wheels on the roll cab, and the top box had a slight scratch

Halfords Professional and Industrial are on different levels.

I have an Industrial cab - was bought with a 150 piece tool kit for £150 in a boxing day pricing error.

Have to report it's excellent, very sturdy and in my case an absolute bargain. Even at nearer full price I'd happily buy one, they are far better than you'd expect, just with no resale value.

Also have a Pro cab and large top box - these were bought together in another Halfords pricing f***up.

These aren't so good, far lighter duty construction, drawers are flimsy and don't shut/lock well (you have to push dead square and too hard to get them to lock shut).

If it was for occasional use, then they are just about OK, but at full price or for professional use I wouldn't touch them - would go straight to Industrial or second hand Strap On.

Thanks guys, all good advice. I had eliminated the Industrial range due to the price. Of course in the shop with empty drawers it all feels smooth and nice but loaded up with heavy tools it might be a different matter completely.

I hadn't even considered the re-sale value but actually it makes a lot of sense as I have been discussing emigration with the Mrs recently.

I know you can't be Snap-On, just never imagined i could afford it. A complete setup for £600 I would Snap-Up  Sorry!

I've got the black Industrial roll cab and have had it for around 4 years. Although I don't use it every day it gets used fairly often and still feels like new, the drawers slide in and out freely and don't appear to have dropped even when left open for a week or so with heavy kit in. The only downside is I would have prefered another large drawer, but I think I can solve that problem by buying the top box to go with it and re-arranging stuff.

have you looked at machine mart stuff ?and it comes in pretty colours.

you might be able to get more of the halfords stuff if you know someone with a trade card as well.

worth keeping an eye out for MAC tools too, quality of them seems pretty comparable to snapon from the workshops I've been in.

I think the machine mart stuff is Clarke? It comes in 3 ranges too like the Halfords stuff and I eliminated it only because I can't see what it's like. The high end stuff is a little pricey. You get what you pay for though.

The black industrial Halfords stuff is emerging here as ok.

I've got some of the halfords pro storage units, had them for a few years and there great. For home use they are ideal.

Another user of the black Industrial units; bought a few years ago when they were on a similar offer. Leagues ahead of the red Pro ones. Has been absolutely faultless, drawers run lovely even when fully loaded up - very sturdy units, and the peace of a lifetime warranty on them too. I've had the top box loaded up and lifted into a service wagon on the handles alone; worried they'd just ping off in the weight but no - they're made to do the job. Gets my thumbs up.

I have the Halffords Black Industrial 6 Drawer cabinet and 6 drawer chest. The quality is fantastic, the drawer slide action is silky smooth even with lots of weight in them. The drawers have a good locking system on them too. I was lucky and got both for under £300 when the chest was offered free with the cabinet. I highly recommend the industrial range.

Oh, and I don't work for Halfords lol.

I have two five draw roller cabinets a mid box and a top box. All Halfords pro, and bought when on a good sale. I have been more than happy with them. As for re-sale value not bothered as will keep them til the day I die.
