Has it really got this expensive?

Looking for insurance on an L reg 205 Trio 1.8 Diesel (Non turbo)

28 year old with full no claims plus the wife also 28 with full NCB named driver.

Can only get 3PTFT due to value, doing only 3000 miles a year.

Private car park in a low crime area. I have an expired SP30.

The best I can find is around £250 to £300, I paid less than that for the car!

Sorry to add another rant to the mountain of other insurance based rants.

I do feel better for that.

£250 for a years insurance cover doesn't sound that bad to me, regardless of what car it is for the potential for you to have a crash and cause a claim of thousands of pounds is still there.

Sorry but working in the trade I can tell you that IS a competitive quotation.

The low value of the car does not really come into it, it is about the full risk presented.

Not by current standards maybe. Had it been a more comprehensive package I would have been happier but a limited mileage 3PFT on a cheap car it still seems like a joke.

I guess one good back injury claim and I could pay for my insurance for the next few years, maybe thats the way forward

Yeah, its competitive, I just wish it wasnt.

I am more annoyed at the claim culture thats driving it all up in the first place!

Not looking forward to when the renewal for the Passat comes through next year as I didnt pay much for for that fully comp doing 12k miles a year. I dread to think what that will cost.

I had to pay £650 on a STDT recently, its s*it but I couldn't get a better quote anywhere else, I even tried doing some quotes with more 'favourable' variables, no claims bonus, older age etc and they were still really poorly price, its getting out of hand.

I think it's ridiculous that you can in essence insure a car worth £2k for the same as one worth £500.

I get you can do the same damage in both, but hardly fair is it.

I can't find insurance for the GTi6 for less than £470. The Mi with bodies & cage was less than £400 earlier this year.

It doesn't sound much but I'm over 30 with 5 years NCB, no claims or points.

The standard 1.9 was £170 for the year with a 30bhp limit on modifications, perhaps I should sell the black one and buy some carbs...

Is it the age of the car that is the risk or the driver ?

I'm of similar age and status, full NCB but my wife has two claims and I own a 06 plate C4. Policy is FC with no limits on miles and comes to £24pm, I renewed last month with esure iirc (which I'm not  )

I would be interested to know this too, also is there a significant reduction in premium once over 30 for example?

Being a 3PFT quote I sort of see why it doesnt make much odds what value is put on the car, as if its my fault I wouldnt get a pay out anyway (which only makes it all the more annoying) and as Baz said I can do as much damage in a 205 as I can in a Passat (well, maybe if I really try )

There must be some structure to the premium calculations but it does seem to be a bit of a lotery.

I doubt you can get much under £200 even over 30 years old

Insurance always seems pretty random to me but I got my monies worth this month. Renewed for £280 fully comp (which I thought was pretty good) on an 06 C4 and within three days had to claim for a new windscreen. The windscreen would have cost me well over £700. I paid £75...

I do think that the cost of insurance for a cheap (sub £500) car is frightening, but it's likely that older cars are more likely to be stolen due to them being easier to get into hense why modern cars seem better value to insure.

In my case i have found that fully comp is cheaper (or very little difference) than tpft

Something along the lines of if you only want the car on minimum cover then the presumption is made that you dont care about the car and may drive it that way??? Thus increasing the risk of accident/ 3rd party claims.

I do think I am a really lucky man, but that has precisely sod all to do with what I paid for an MOT failure that needed parts and labour, nor getting a "competitive" insurance quote.

Sh!t the bed! I like 205's but not enough to pay that. I remember paying £1100 to insure my first car and thought that was bad!

Spent lunch yesterday on the phone, one company told me to buy the £470 policy as it was soo cheap.

Another said "We'll do it for £450" and then stuck £100 on the excess.

Today, phoned Footman James "You'll be happy, £250".

Two more to try but looks like I'll be keeping the 205 for another year! :)
