Strangely Short Valve Springs In An 8v Head.

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm in the process of repairing a cylinder head after an inlet valve let go and made one hell of a mess!

Apparently it was built by David Baker of Puma Racing Engines (Who is uncontactable and is apparently retired) and it has been fitted with much shorter than standard valve springs.

Instead of the usual 53mm long springs, they are 47mm long and have 4mm thick platforms to sit on. They look very standard, the diameter and wire gauge are exactly the same as a standard spring...just much shorter!

Although still serviceable, they have taken a hammering and if they could be inexpensively replaced then that would be cool...

Truth is, it needs much lighter valves, springs buckets and retainers. This thing clearly spent its entire life at 7grand or above and the valve seats have begun to shatter!!

Anyway, if anybody can possibly help, I'd be very grateful.

I know that Dave Baker / Pumaracing used to sell an uprated valve spring kit for 8v's - quite possibly that, although I've never seen them.

Similar problem to what Sean had with the Puma set up IIRC.

The best way forward is to fit double springs. Finding a suitable single spring is near impossible.

Got it. Thanks Petert and all!

I presumed since they were seemingly standard that it was a cheeky mod using springs from another member of the Peugeot family...

Oh well, I'll advise him that doubles are the way forward, it would certainly make a lot of sense.
