Starting And Running Propblems.

Recommended Posts

hi all. ive had a look around on the forum and found some threads with similar issues but still not sure what to do really.

bare with me quite a long problem.

so heres my problem .. i have a 1.6 gti and it was running ok. I came home from work on thursday night as normal about 5 miles, parked up, switched off. Friday morning went out to the car, started it up then started clearing the windscreen. after about 2 or 3 minutes it cut out so i tried starting it again and nothing it just turned over. I removed the sparkplugs to check for spark and there was but the plugs were very black and oily so cleaned them up and put them back in. tryed starting again and it turned over for a while and eventually fired up but again cuut out 2-3 minutes later, and would not restart again, so i left it and got a lift into work.

Saturday morning went out to the car and fired it up started straight away and left it running, ran happily for approx 30 mins, took it out for a spin and all seemed ok. I went out in it again saturday night and once on sunday and it was fine. So went out to it this morning and exactly the same happened as friday morning. Had another look at it tonight and it fired straight up. While it was running i took the oil filler cap off and it was blowing alot of smoke/steam out.

Any help welcome and much appreciated.

Cheers Russell

JRL

Im no Mechanic but recently have had problems with mine starts perfectly sometimes and other times it has no life in it at all touch wood things have been ok recently after doing the following:

remove battery and give it a full charge( if not fully charged ecu will not get enough power to start) use a multimetre see if its doing 14 or more volts whilst running the cold maybe affecting your battery??

clean as many wiring terminals as you can remove any corrosion particularly ecu relay,

check ignition leads

check ignition coil

check for water in dizzy cap

check crankshaft sensor clen if needed.

Anthony on this forum pointed me in the right direction of checking my ecu relay as they can get damaged with vibration if not secured I cleaned the terminals on mine and so far its been ok since.

Hope this is a little help good luck with your pug.
