Can't Screw On New Oil Filter...

hi,

 

whilst trying to do a "simple" oil and filter change on my 1.9 gti everything was going well until

i tried to screw on the new filter, no matter how hard i tried i could get it to bite/screw on.

 

i've got the right filter and tried another new one with no luck.

 

the old one will just about go back on.

 

whats the thread where you screw it on called? is it the "oil filter insert.

 

the thread is quite worn, probably by all the oil filter chnages over the yrs. and the old filter only needs a

few twists to be tight, ie not a lot of overlap.

 

other cars i've had needed quite a few turns to take filter on/off.

 

is it possible/easy to replace the thread, does it just unscrew with a spanner/socket.

 

what part should i search for?

hi, yes, already double checked and it's the right filter.

The thread does screw out, sounds like the thread has been crossed when the last filter was put on - hence that will just about go on but no others will.

 

I can't recall if you can get a long socket over the top or it you have to grip the threaded part itself, sure someone will come along and clarify.

 

There are at least two lengths of that thread - without oil cooler / exchanger it's the short type as you have and the long type with cooler. I had an Mi16 309 that I had issues with the oil/water heat exchanger on. To get it on the road very quickly we got a short threaded type from local Pug overnight and had car back on the road next morning.

 

Certainly when I bought one from Pug it was cheap enough - would try there first.
