Fitting An Oil Cooler

Recommended Posts

Paul Smith

Hi

I'm thinking of fitting an oil cooler from a 1.9 is there anything I need to fit one, I have the filter and pipes, not sure how it'd connect though

Thanks

Paul

If you've got everything, it's a straight swap - complete setup consists of the cooler, pipes, takeoff, and threaded nut/clamp

I'd question whether you need it on a 1.6 though on anything less than a dedicated trackday car - remember that over-cooling the oil isn't good!

From a 1.9 to what? If its a 1.6 (or any engine for that matter) then all you need is the cooler, pipes and sandweich plate. The plate sits between the block and the filter and this is where the pipes come out. A sandwich plate with a thermostat is recomended as not to over cool the oil.

Ali

(EDIT Bloody Anthony got there before me!)

Did the 1.9 sandwich plate have a thermostat or where could I get one?

As Anthony said, why do you need one?

Unless you're seriously tracking/eventing it, there's no need. Even Peugeot didn't fit one from the factory. And I mean neither an oil cooler nor an oil-water heat exchanger.

Not sure why you're bothering...

As above, waste of time unless you pasting it round a track in the heat.

It's just for fun and as said above if I can get one using a thermostat then it should fine, I've never had an oil cooler and hey you never know might be handy to have

But you simply don't need it on a 1.6 GTI unless your spending all the time in the red on track.

WTF?

Well I suppose it's your time to waste if you want to.

That's 2 topics I've read in the last 2 minutes, where people just seem to not bother to read and understand what's written.

I do understand but maybe you do not this is a forum so by all means air your opinion but no need to get rude about it, I have a nice powerful car and use the Gti for fun so it may seem like I'm doing some strange things but as it's been said it's my time to waste and maybe when I make a change I may disagree and love the change. I thank anyone on here for there help and advice even if some come with concern but I do not like the slating of people that are trying different things.

Thanks again

Paul

Hi Paul,

My 1.6 struggled to get enough temp into the oil rather than too much, particularly when just pottering around in the winter months. Track use in the summer caused no concerns with temps.

Be careful with regard to how much the stat 'leaks' oil out to the cooler and have a mechanical means of blanking off the cooler from the airflow.

My opinion too.

waste of time.

The only time my (Mi16) gets hot is on track.

I've driven up and over the Alps during the summer with ambient temps of 30 deg, no problem. Oil temp didn't climb any higher than it does at a constant 7000rpm in 5th.

I run no oil cooler - although I do have an ali finned sump.
