Measuring 'unknown' Head Height

Recommended Posts

MerlinGTI

I have a head here I'm about to get skimmed etc... Thing is I'd like to know how much meat is left on it, its obviously seccy hand and of unknown history. I have a digital vernier and a snow day off work \o/ soooo...

I measure from the top of the camshaft to the HG surphace face correct?

Dizzy end or pulley end?

What should I be looking at mm wise?

Whats the minium?

I have a diagram thing I downloaded from here some time ago, but I think its more xu10 based and tbh I dont really understand it. I would prefer someone to hold my damp girly hand through this process :)

Any other things I should be checking an unknown head for apart from valve strightness that is? it will be pressure tested when off to the machine shop.

Many thanks chap-a-roos :)

Thankyou Damir :P

Ive just measured it and im getting:

157.41 mm. Nominal value of an unskim'ed head being 158.931.

Clearly this head has had a lot taken off it in the past, what concerns me is it needs another re-face before I can use it.

Will it go again?

Sure :D ... usual resurface skim is 0.20mm , or even lower , but 0.20mm is about average for most heads which didn't overheat badly and distort , or something like that ..

Dont suppose you have the details of where to measure the 16v head height do you please Damir, I have got the measurements from the rebuild manual but no indication of where to measure.

Thanks

Steve
