What a load of bollock$ from UK insurances?

Winter tyres will increase the premium!

Tyres are tyres, I blame the stupidity of the people informing their insurance in the first place for changing the tyres!

I guess the person who came up with this idea doesn't even know what winter tyres are.

And don't tell me it is due to statistics that cars with winter tyres have more claims as I doubt this

What next, if you hang a magic tree will the insurance premium go up?

A member of another forum told me his premium went up by £60 for fitting snow tyres and wheels!

Under what grounds?!

If people don't act now insurances will continue with their greediness.

Court/ombudsman should fine those insurances doing this!

In Germany although winter tyres have not been compulsory so far (I think they became this year), if you have an accident and are using summer tyres in winter the insurance company may refuse to pay.

But no, in UK they find it as a way to make money. Idiots, if only they realised that there would be less accidents (and hence claims) then it would benefit everyone.

I agree with you. Unfortunately for motorists the primary objective for an Insurance Co. is to make profits for its share holders using any tactics.

If you had a crash using winter tyres and they tried to reduce/void the payout, I would be straight to court for a dose of common sense.

does that also apply to just changing the wheels, eg say 5.5j to 6j steelies for example?

Without a doubt, a wheel change (from std) voilds any insurance even the same size rim should do as well as its a mod and not std.

Mind with the right size winter tyres I cannot see what they can do as a tyre is approved, same would go for 888's etc

I had to laugh at this reply, If I can happily replace my "summer" tyres with cheap Chinese ones without telling my insurer (or do we have to ring them up every time we get new tyres?) why should I have to when I fit good quality all-season/winter tyres?

When I look at the odd car when parking up I see more of these than anything else

Just dont tell them. Its very unlikely they would ever get anywhere classing winter tyres as a modification.

Mind you, if you ask up front if they would charge you extra for fitting winter tyres, you at least quickly find out the animal you're dealing with.

Imaging having to negotiate a claim with a company of that nature - nightmare I should think?

I do like the cheap Chinese tyres analogy.

Isn't it the same as any "upgrade", you may drive faster as you think the car can handle it and then could crash.

I had a good quote of £391 per annum from Sureterm last week - was genuinely going to take it, looked again this week the quote had expired, now the cheapest on offer is about £600+

Don't winter tyres have lower speed ratings, hence the insurance company thinking your car is no longer factory standard?

When I ditched the runflats on my BMW for normal ones, I had to tell the insurance company. Not that it increased the premium though.
