Gti6 Sump On Mi16 Alloy Engine - Bolt Lengths

Recommended Posts

Hiya Guys

I've done a search and have seen a few posts on here with regards to fitting a GTi6 sump to a Mi16 alloy engine.

My current sump was a tin sump and spacer/strengthen plate.

I'm planning on keeping the spacer/strengthen plate and have a PeterT extended pump for this too.

I saw that i need to countersink the two holes where the air con pump would fit so i can use the caphead bolts from my Mi.

The thing that's confusing me is that I keep reading that the bolts are too long or too short.

My bolts all seem to be the same length. I can't tell you the exact length as i'm not with the car at the moment.

For an example of the length before countersinking the two holes at the air con end of the sump, the mi caphead bolts would fit but only the tip was showing through the sump. Hence the need to countersink. The other sump bolts are all the same size to this so that might give you an idea as to the size of the sump bolts.

However apart from the two bolts at the air con end, they all seem long enough to go through the GTi6 sump, spacer/strengthen plate and block.

My concern is that i've used all of my original ones and now i'm reading that the 2 near the crank need to be smaller and might have gone through.

If they have will they only go into the seal or is there the risk that they will go right through and into the crank? Tbh they dont seem that long to be able to do that.

I've not done these up fully yet, but these bolts were holding the old tin sump into place and were fully tight. The sump thickness is about the same at this end so if they are too long then i'm worried that the damage might already be done when the tin sump was installed!!

Hope you can help

Thanks Greg

Tin sumps don't have the longer two bolts near the AC pump mount, whereas alloy sumps do - hence you don't have them.

Ah right so i cant just countersink the holes and fit the current caphead bolts? Or will i need longer ones and still countersink?

As for the two bolts at the flywheel end will using the tin sump length ones cause issues?

Thanks

Alloy sump ones are slightly longer so you'll need a set, better off tapping the holes to M8 then you can buy pretty much anything without hassle

Ah so the ones i've currently got wont have damaged the crank oil seal at the flywheel end?

I've currently used these tin sump ones to hold the GTi6 sump in place (haven't sealed the sump yet) They seem to have gone all the way through the sump, stiffening plate and block.

But the sump bolts which go along the side of the block which partially show through are not showing as much as they did with the Tin sump which makes sense now you say that the Alloy sump bolts are slightly longer.

Guess the question is will the Tin sump ones be long enough? I guess at the flywheel end they will be the correct length?
