Decent Foot Pump

Recommended Posts

miamistu

Hello,

Was just wondering if anybody could recommend a decent foot pump. I've been through several Halfords ones and they're all badly made rubbish.

Willing to pay a few extra quid for something which will last :(

I did have a twin barrel Halfords one that managed a couple of seasons sprinting & hillclimbing before giving up the ghost. It was fine whilst it worked but considering that this equated to about 20 events it's not that great for longevity.

So I bought a single barelled Michelin one from the local motorfactors (needed one desperately) and to be fair it's well built and the gauge isn't to far out either.

I've got one of those cheapo electric compressors- does the job with less effort and has lasted OK thus far.

That's the one I've got (had). I've been through about 1 every 6 months.

Might try one of those. Really should just get my slow puncture seen to. :(

If it helps, I can recommend you what *not* to buy, and that's the RAC (re)branded ones as sold by Asda amongst other places.

Less than 3 months old, seldom used, and it's already on deaths door, making scrapping sounds and scoring the shaft thanks to the slop that's already developed. For comparison, the Halfords one I had previously lasted me probably 4-5 years or so and had much more use.

I didn't expect a great deal from it, but it's fallen massively short of even my dismal expectations :(

We sell a few types at work. There's the obvious Autocare/Carplan ones which are crap, the next ones up are HD Maypole, not too bad but still cheapos. We've also start keeping the Michelin ones which look very good. Not cheap but they do a single or double barrelled one.

As mentioned the electric ones are great, Ring do ones starting from £17, up to £32 which that you get an digital guage and auto shut-off with an LED light on the front. Good up to about 110psi, too.

Easy one this, Both of mine are Dunlop foot pumps from around 1930, these beat any modern day rubbish hands down, one is still on the orginal hose too.

You should find these on Ebay etc

I'm still on my Halfords foot pump from back in 2001. Works fine and has been used a fair amount on a fair few cars and bicycles. Still works fine now. The missus has stolen it though now, so I expect it to be covered in food and food wrappers and so forth from the floor of her car. :D

It won't last!

I had one until the crappy connector started leaking air. Was great while it worked.

Michelin double barrel job, mines lasted 5 years so far, lots of abuse in the mud at events, still going.

Plus it has a decent calibrated gauge. (+-1psi)

I bought a Michelin single barrel and it's utter tat. The rubber feet all fell off the first time I used it and the little bobbins that hold the pump closed both snapped off their moorings the second time. It also takes a stupid amount of force to remove the connector from the valve and the connector regularly pops of the hose. Useless.
