Ok, so yesterday at about 10am I want to start the 205 and was greeted by a nasty crunch just as it started and since I've a very concerning rattle comming from the timimg belt side of the engine.

I should say it was very cold - the Mondeo's temp gauge said the temperature was -10 a bit earlier!

The car seems to be running ok but I am worried I've done something quite nasty.

I've also just noticed quite a bit of oil from the back of the engine but cant really see yet where it is coming from.

Any ideas/thoughts would be very welcome!

Thanks

John. :(

frozen water pump, now knackered ??

i would also go with this, i heard of someone snapping there belt last year with this as pump was frozen solid.

Looks like you have been lucky but i bet the water pump has snapped some fins off etc, you need to retreve them if it has too ideally when you swap it as they could work there way around and block something up.

It does sound like the water pump was frozen. I did this on a TU engine two years ago and it made the cambelt jump bending valves.

It sounds like you have been initially very lucky but if I were you I wouldnt even run the car again until you have inspected it. If bits of the water pump have broke they could either (as above) work there way to somewhere they will do damage or they could just jam the water pump itself and jump the cambelt.

Just called a local garage to try and avoid lying on the floor of a cold garage and they quoted 5 hrs labour :D does that sound right?

M@tt

just happened to the missus' golf at the weekend, luckily(not sure if thats the right word considering the number of components buggered!) the impellor became unstuck from the shaft driven by the pulley so wasn't pumping the hot water round, it really didn't make a noise after it had initially made a horrible grinding/crunching noise so assumed it had just freed itself but it hadn't.
