Cold Starting Issues

Recommended Posts

Guest flowernp

Hi, my 205 1.9 gti 1987 has been perfect all summer (apart from small amount of misfire on start up) and in the last week when it has got cold its now playing up and im at a loose end as what to do about it.

if it starts when its cold it runs but initially misfires then fine for a couple of mins then just dies and wont restart. i have to leave it for half an hour and try again. Usually it wont fire for about 30 seconds and eventually fires misfiring badly, gets better then cuts out again. once i have managed to get it up to operating temp it runs spot on.

After the first episode of this i replaced spark plugs, ht leads and dizzy but made no difference.

I have had a good search on here but cant seam to find anyone with the same symptoms. Anyone know what's up or what I should replace to sort this out? i'm guessing its some kind of temp sensor error.

All advice greatly appreciated

Nick

I would have a look at the ecu temp sender

Not to be a Knob link

smithy

As I have found out the past couple of days the SAD is also critical for cold starting so might well be worth checking along with condition of the hoses going to it.

If still having problems with new ECU temp sensor , try :

- ignition amp (replace with a spare , known good item .. and upon replacing re-apply the thermal transfer paste @ the back of the amp.)

- tachymeric relay (i.e. fuel pump relay , as above , for a test replace with known good ... failing diode inside the relay sometimes makes similar problem ..)

- perform compression test
