Head Gasket Issue

Recommended Posts

Moby

My Mi16 showing signs of a head gasket failure , so I showed it to an ex AA guy he's worked on Mi before. The tell tale signs of Mayo like substance in the oil cap and pipes and smelt like a mixture. Losing oil n some water too. He's priced the job but I think it's bit steep. I'm looking for someone Reliable near manchester who could give a second opinon and estimate of costs to repair and do the job too, because i'm not able myself and I havn't got the time.

Mayo in the oil filler is "normal" in this cold weather, particularly if it doesn't do regular long journeys / damn good thrashings to get the oil hot.

Cooling system pressurising and expansion tank smelling "fuelly", together with coolant loss (and no obvious leaks) is the usual headgasket failure warnings, together sometimes with low compression or rough running if bad enough. A dip test in the expansion tank to test for hydrocarbons is the usual way of proving it if you're unsure.

Oil loss in my experience is rarely a head gasket issue on XU engines - much more likely to be valve stem seals on an old engine that's not been rebuilt previously (blue smoke on overrun and idle).

There's a few members on here around the Manchester/Warrington sort of area, or there's always Skip Brown about an hour or so away - although they're unlikely to be cheap for doing the job if that's the primary concern, but I would trust them to do a good job.

The Mayo in oil cap smells bit like petrol. I do drive it on the motorway. I'll see if I can find someone to do the dip test. I think Skip Brown's going to be bit too expensive for me, I have their number I might jus ring them to get an idea anyway.

He said roughly around £500 or more depending on extent of damage, to do head gasket ,water pump, timing belt, full service plugs etc.

Cheap I would say, parts alone with head work would come to a good £300.00 min then labour on top which is a good few hours
