Starter Problem

I have been rebuilding my 205 and have replaced alomost evey part with new, Time to start the car, But when i tried to turn the car over it would not crank the flywheel. This is a new starter motor, I bench tested the starter and its fine. Am i wright that there is 2 types of starters a short and a long type. Has any one else had this problem. and any one have a part number.

Its a 1.6 205 gti H reg

When you say "doesn't crank the flywheel", do you mean that the starter doesn't turn over at all, or the starter motor spins but doesn't turn the engine?

It does not turn the engine. the starter turns, its as if its missing the fly wheel.

When you bench tested the starter, did the cog on the starter motor move outwards an inch or so as it engaged and spun?

Yes The gear came out when i turned the key. and spun, Are you aware there are 2 different types

Do you mean by two types the early/late, large/small body types?

 

Any starter from an XU engine will fit.
