Anyone In Milton Keynes Area Know Pugs Well?

Recommended Posts

Hey folks,

I have a 205gti with an mi16 conversion

recently the drive shaft snapped, probably due to my front suspension being a tad hard for all the pot holes round my house!

Basically I've taken it to my local garage twice now to get it fixed and twice its come back not quite right..the steering wheel still feels a bit disconnected from the wheels when on and off the accelerator and there is a wobble at 60+mph

Does anyone that actually knows what they are doing live around the MK area who could diagnose whats really wrong with my car without me having to spend shed loads of money having to keep taking it back in to get it "fixed" Or at least someone who could identify which parts are from what model so i can fix it myself...

??

Cheers,

Jonathan

Sounds like the balljoints have got some play, or the wishbone bushes have gone.

Does it snatch when you accelerate quickly?

sorry for lack or response, i havent got internet set up at home yet so i have to sneak on at work when I can! I had a new lower arm fitted on one side, so i think that should have new ball joint and bushes?? Or the garage should have at least picked up on it when they changed it if those things were wrong.. The side with my new lower arm on now has better camber on it so my tire isnt wearing at incredibly fast rate like the other side still is! Im guessing the new one they put on is longer. The old one on the other side is clearly the wrong fit as my tire literally does wear down in about 2 weeks driving normally :) Im also guessing a different lenght arm on either side might have some say in the steering feel!?

Some thing odd there as the 205 arm is the shortest one sold, the 309 is longer and this will wear the tyre edge more, worth getting the make of the wishbone to as the cheap import ones are rubbish

its wearing down on the outside edge, so i think the old one is too short.. the new one must be longer. The garage are currently getting back to me on which one they used.. but your right there is definitely something wrong with the front end of my car! This is why I really need someone who knows what to look for to take a quick peak at it!

The other cause of odd camber at the front of a 205 is that it has been fitted with an upright from a 306. These give positive camber on a 205. I recently did some work on a forum members car that had been through a few reputable "specialists" who either hadn't noticed or hadn't mentioned to the owner that it had one odd 306 upright. The car handled awfully as a result of this. A replacement 205 upright fitted along with quite a few new suspension bits and the car was transformed.

Could it be simply the tracking?

no its definitely the camber... one side is correct, the other side is slightly positive. I put a new lower arm on Saturday hoping it would solve it but it hasn't..my guess at the moment is that the hubs must be different on each side?? can you buy adjustable lower arms for a 205?

Sounds like you mean upright instead of hub. The hub wouldn't affect camber but as Tom has said the upright could. To answer your question the upright is the piece that mounts on to the bottom of the damper, and the driveshaft runs through it to drive the hub. The upright casting also consists of the steering knuckle to which then track rod end mounts and the brake caliper brackets also mount to the upright.

I would certainly make sure these are both matching and for 205.

ah right I see.. I was unaware that the hub and upright were two seperate pieces!

So the next question is.. which hubs fit which uprights, cos im now back to the original problem where I have no idea which hubs or uprights I have on my car cos someone else put them on!!

Will it be easier to buy adjustable lower arms and adjust the camber that way than try and mess around findining which upright needs to go on there?? My new tire is now down to canvas after just 4 weeks of driving on it so something needs to change asap :s

does anyone know which upright im suppose to use with an mi16 engine in a 205? if so anyone got one for the drivers side? Adjustable arms seem rare and massively expensive!!?

Jonathan,

If you want to come down, we can jack it up and look for anything obvious. I'm around late afternoon tomorrow xmas eve or after the holidays.

I'm just off J11 of the M1.

Keith
