205 Mi16 Exhaust Problems/modifications Cut Out Valves

I have a 205 running a mi16 lump that has been tilted and has a 4 branch manifold, 4 to 2 that runs down to under the gear stick area and then goes to 1 all the way back to the rear of the car. i have a continuing problem with the whole exhaust from the gear stick area back keeps coming off, i have tried new clamps, new mounts etc but nothing seems to work, the last time this came off it cracked one side of the 4 branch manifold and it came loose and i lost it somewhere on the road, so i have to do some major welding and fabricating to the exhaust.

 

Whilst i am doing this work i am looking to fit a remote exhaust cutout valve in my exhaust so was wondering if anyone had ever fitted one to a 205 if so where.

 

Also where can you run an exhaust through other than standard, ie side exit, drivers side, up front, any ideas and possible alternative routes would be very handy!!

best approach would be to untilt the engine and get it all sorted properly.

 

what would the exhaust cutout valve be for? never imagined a 205 ever needing one of those.

Just weld a couple of tubes on and attached them with a clip, Just like a bike or Race exhaust,

But with that manifold you don;t need to tilt the engine, that could be the problem

I have something similar, yet works loose at the Y piece making it sound crap. I think I've figured it out though, I'm using some old backbox hangers that allows the exhaust to swing from side to side lots hence allowing the Y piece to work loose. Got my eye on some Powerflex jobs to sort it, along with a donut. The one I have doesn't seem to fit correctly.

 

As Miles said, you don't need to tilt the engine for a 4-2-1 manifold.

You don't normally have to, but I know atleast two 205 Mi's that have still needed to be (slightly) tilted owing to shell tolerances etc :wub:

The exhaust cut out is becuase i enjoy tunnel running.

 

The engine came tilted when i brought it, so might look at untilting it, but i will have to move the rad as i want to put a standard sized inlet manifold n as im currently running a shortened one.

 

I have thought about alternative ways to connect the exhaust, trying a similar method to attaching when you use a donut joint!!

You don't need to move the rad, just trim down the fan housing so the rad can tilt further forward. Putting the engine at the correct angle would be top of my list.

wrong angle means oil pickup is not submerged correctly in the sump, which means you have a waiting game for a bottom end knock.

 

loads of project threads here showing how to get around the engine-tilt scenario.

 

also, another s*it-sounding 205 is not exactly what the country needs. please think twice about the 'exhaust-cutout' thing.

 

I have seen a custom made manifold/exhaust combo run through under the sills, but this was more of a show car.

I take it you're talking about a slip-joint that keeps coming loose?

 

If it's clamped up and coming loose then you have a problem somewhere that is causing the joint to be in tension, fitting new clamps and funny valves isn't going to help. Seems like your system is too short tbh, which ties in with you tilting the engine. I'd check and sort that first, you shouldn't have to clamp the s*it out of the connection to get it to stay! I have a custom stainless system with a slip-join from DP to system and mine stays put just fine.

Apologies for not providing a useful response but I had 2 4-2-1 manifolds for my 205 which were both supposed to fit the untilted engine, neither did, one fouled the bulkhead whilst there was still a gap along the top edge of exhaust manifold/head before the bolts were anywhere near tight.

 

Also if you switch over to a 306 GTi6 inlet and TB it is ever so slightly (~10-12mm) shorter than the standard Mi16 one and you may not have such a clearance headache with the rad.
