I mean REALLY handle.

I have got the basics right eg, good rear beam, new wishbones, new steering rack and track rod ends and sticky tyres. The only modified bits that I have are a full Bilstein StreetLine kit. So uprated dampers front and rear with a 30mm drop on the front. (Which I think are very good for the money and a good level of stifness for a road car.)

My questions are these:

1) Would dropping the rear torsion bars by one spline be of any help?

2) What else would make a good improvement? Eg adjustable top mounts etc.

Cheaper the better please. :P

powersteering, LSD, and bigger brakes will help you get outta the trouble you'll get into by testing to see if the car really does handle :P

adjustable top mounts would be a goodun

multipointed rollcages and seam welding (which is free) help handling a lot!

strut braces help, £40 unless you make ur own

strengthening the shell in any way is suprising helpful!

take off the subframe, adic bath it and strengthen that too.

solid mount your rear beam

getting the right tyre size/width is vital (pug got it pretty right with their standard gti rims in my opinion)

replace all the gear reaction rods (pretty cheap) and get a nice steering wheel.... after all that's the bit youre actually touching!

i'll holla if i think of more.

lol!!!

Powersteering is not for me, LSD is on the wish list and big brakes are on the window sill at home!

Didn't really want to go as far as seamwelding/roll cages.

I agree about the wheels and steering wheel. I have got standard Gti for both and like them alot!

replace all the gear reaction rods
What do you mean by these mate? Anti roll bar links?

Might go for some top mounts then, should help with tyre wear aswell.

How is negative camber increased on the rear?

And what about uprated rear torsion bars?

Easy start with 309 rear beam and wishbones. Then go from there.

I can sure vouch for NickR's 205. In wet northern Wales, it felt like there was loads of grip available.

Cost you a few quid though.......

Big brakes won't make it handle better (I know it was meant to aid braking) as they increase the unsprung weight of the car unless they are expensive aluminium calipers, bells etc.

It'll smell of burning for months.

But it'll make the shell a bit stiffer.

unless you are a hardcore rally driver, the only part of the chassis that is worth weilding up is the bulkhead seam. The lip that runs through the downpipe tunnel below the manifold
