Starter Motor For Mi16 In A 205

Recommended Posts

My starter motor is on the way out. I have heard that the starter from a 306 2.0L is a better unit to use as it has more crank. Can anyone confirm this for me please.

For those tha say replace it with an MI16 starter - I HAVE - three times. Can't tell you why but the engine does not want to crank when it's hot. Wait for it to cool down for thirty minutes and its fine

I have a new battery 620CCA, 3 B&S cable for supply and earth. Three starters do the same thing. I'm hoping the 306 item has a planitary gearing that will solve my problem.

Many thanks,

Moo

The starter from any XU-engined Peugeot or Citroen will fit. The smaller, better ones are used on any of the later models - 306, 406, Xantia, Xsara, etc. The diesels usually have the most powerful starters, but the petrol ones are still a good upgrade.

I've got one from a 406 diesel, and it made a huge difference.

You'll, probably fix your problem with new leads. It's simply not logical to have to replace 3 starters. I suggest you try that first.

Yes is the answer, as XU10 and other iron block (especially diesel) starters are smaller and provide more welly.

I have a slimline Valeo starter if you want for £45 posted. Was om my 2.2Mi so I know it works.

Yup, I have new leads. 3 B&S including earth leads, new crimp terminals, even a relay in use to throw the solinoid!. I will get a starter this weekend. Thank you so much for the offer of your starter but i think it will cost more that 45 quid to send it to Australia. I should be able to pick one up here.

So if i get a 406 diesel I should be on the ball. Thanks for your help.

If they're used original type 205/405 "fat" bodied starters, then it's entirely plausable to have three giving similar issues - I now just bin any used starter motors of that style as they're rubbish frankly and inevitably going to fail sooner rather than later. I agree that typical corroded wiring and lousy connection in the brown multiplug won't be helping matters, but not cranking when headsoaked (but OK when cold) usually points to the starter itself in my experience.
