I Need A New Car, Any Opinions On These...

So I've been wanting rid of my 405 for a while now, its been a great workhorse and got me through times when I was totally skint! :o

I've wanted a v6 406 coupe for quite a while now but didn't have much luck finding the one I wanted. I then browsed other options and quite fancy the idea of a Omega...

Whilst the 406 is much better looking the Omega is RWD wich appeals, I know its not going to be anything special but I'm sure I could have a bit of fun with it.

They are both 3.0 and the performance is very similar as are the prices. I'm just not sure?! Anyone driven an omega?

check the insurance for them first, the 406 is quite expensive to insure, as for the Omega, its a Vauxhall :o

I've already had quotes and its all very cheap compaired to the £750 on my 205.

I know its a vauxhall and not the best looking car but I was hoping the RWD side might make up for it with fun?

I got very close to buying an Elite 3.0 V6 a few years ago. I'm glad I didn't. My advice would be, keep the 205 for hurtling about in, and get something that will do mileage with ease, good fuel economy, and needs the bonnet opening once per year for a service.

I'm guessing the v6 version of the 406 doesn't fit into that category! B) I did look at the 2.2 hdi but they are a fair bit more expensive and I'm not sure the engine suits the car.... :o

Have you considered one of those v6 mondeo's (st220?), good value for money. I'd go for the pug out of those 2.

Been in one of those st220's and they can go alright, nice engine note too!

IMHO

Omega: big, heavy, ugly ... Vauxhall (i.e. no character)

406: beautiful both inside and outside (designed by Pininfarina if I am not mistaken), should drive well being a Peugeot

406 every time for me.

ST220 is a good option too, Mondeos' handling is very good and with that engine it should go well.

I know a fair people that have owned Omega/Senator V6s and all rave about how good they are. I've never driven one, bit can only guess that they'll be heavy on fuel for a start. RWD everyday of the week though :o

I'm not really after suggestions of other cars to be honest.

I've taken long enough to narrow it down and now I just want to make my mind up! I know the 406 is nicer but I really want to have another RWD car. I can't justify 3 cars and the 205 is not being sold!

I do 100 miles a week so fuel isn't much of a problem.

V6 Omegas are all autos, unless you buy an ex-police car, which will have a million miles on the clock.

But will have been serviced without compromise.

omega

i have had a couple of omegas [no sorry i have had 3 but one only lasted a week]

i had the 2.5 diesel did about 20000 miles and had no proplems but a slow car

ive also had 2 v6s ,quite fast, but you do have to keep on top of them, watch out for oil leaks round the rocker covers, uneven running caused by air leaks.but the big thing is to check when the cambelt was done because if it goes bye bye engine[thats why one only lasted a week] but they are fairley easy to work on and parts are cheap and easy to get hold off.

inside plenty of room and a nice place to be,check the computer as its tends to lose its pixals.

body wise check the rear arches as they like to rust here also the doors.theboot is huge.

yes you can get the rear end out and it slides nicely but in the snow/ice with fat tyres it just likes to spin the wheels.

but the best thing about these cars is that most of them havnt been driven by 20 year olds so have had a easy life and you can pick them up for cheap money as they seen as a old mans car.

I've had several 406s and just one Omega V6. The Omega was horrible to drive and ended up blowing up spectacularly. I would never buy another Omega but I would run a 406 V6 again happily.

Mine was manual and definitely not ex-police.

To be honest I'd be trying to find an ex police car as these are the ones fitted with a LSD and as above, you know its been serviced well etc.

I don't want an unreliable car.... (thats what the 205 is for! :o)

Now that I think about it I think it was only the top-spec models (3.2?)

A friend of mine had one a while ago, he went through two rear diffs and was hugely unreliable. He's now got a 306!

I'v always loved the 406 coupe, such a nice looking and relativly rare car. Never driven or been in a V6 but from videos I'v seen the engine note is awsome! I'm not just being biased, as I'm sure all of us arn't, but the omega does look awful and from other feedback sounds really bad!

IMHO you would be crazy to buy the omega!!!

PS, If the only reason you really want the omega is for RWD then why not cheap Beamers/Audis? I know you weren't after other suggestions though!

We attempted a euro banger rally in a v6 omega 2 years ago.

Surfice to say we didnt complete it due to headgasket failure (It was high miles) but thats another story.

I found it to be a great drive when it was working.

RWD, powerfull, comfy, nice driving position RWD, lots of toys, cheap parts, RWD, bose system, looked ok oh and it was RWD :(
