Oil Cooler

Recommended Posts

P_Monty

Hi folks I had a quick search but couldn't find a previous thread like this...

My 8V 1.9 205 (Ph 1.5 I think) is doing rather a good impression of a BP oil rig at the moment. It appears that the oil cooler is fubar ed but none of the motor factors I've tried have been able to get hold of one.

Before I descend on the local breakers, does anyone know:

a) Does any other car (309?) use one that can be persuaded to fit.

:) A quick and easy way of testing a candidate one without starting the engine and looking for leaks.

c) Do I actually need one, I only use the car for commuting and the odd motorway jaunt to see parents - its never (and is never likely too) see a track.

Thanks

Paul

Just remove it - not needed for road and occasional track use on a 1.9 8v engine IMO

Blimey - that was quick - thanks.

I might do that and then see if I can get the original one repaired in slow time. I guess all i need is a bit of pipe to go between the inlet and outlet pipes..

No, just remove the takeoff plate from the block - it's then exactly as a 1.6 GTi or any other XU without an oil cooler

Maybe I'm being a numpty - I haven't looked yet its a weekend job, but if I unbolt the takeoff plate, do I need some kind of blank to cover where the plate was?

No, the filter will go back on. As soon as you remove the filter, and undo the bolt in the middle of the sandwich plate, all will become clear.

No you just refit the oil filter.

Holy digging up old threads batman....

Well, I finally got round to looking at the job. Got the oil filter off (boy was it tight) and all has become clear.

Next silly question, anyone know what size the nut holding the takeoff plate in place is? All I can tell by offering spanners up to it is bigger than 22mm and smaller than 27 and I need to go and buy a socket to fit.

Cheers

Paul

iirc the central union holding the cooler plate on is 27mm.

The one I just checked from a diesel engine is & afaik they will be the same size if it's an oe fit oil cooler.

Other than that I think[ I'#ve seen them at 24mm. :unsrue:

Graham.

Thanks Graham,

I've compared it with the 27mm I use to undo the back wheel on the motorbike and its smaller than that. 24mm sounds promising as its a convenient 'M" size (M16).
