Trying To Value My Spare Engine...1.9 8v On Tb's

Recommended Posts

Chris H

When i bought my current 205 it came with a nice 8v engine in it.......despite it being a good engine i had a 200bhp mi16 sitting idle so that went in its place B)

The engine was built by skip browns. The spec that i know of is below

Lightened and balanced, fully rebuilt 1.9 bottom end

New pistons and liners,

new valves, valve guides, valve springs

All bearings replaced

GPN head gasket

Baffled sump

PTS Max torque cam

Weber Alpha Mapable ECU and throttle bodies

Pipercross "sausage" air filter

Solid nylon bottom engine mount bush fitted

I was told the head had some light porting but havent got any paperwork to confirm this.

The advert for the car i bought stated the engine had 158bhp

Trouble is that now the engine is out of the car its not able to be shown as a good running engine...despite i know it ran great prior to removal....thats going to lower the value i guess

;)

I have invoices for the engine work from Skip Browns for over £4000 and that doesn't include the throttle bodies and ecu!!!

I have a couple of friends interested in it, or i may fit it into my 1.6 205 rally car or may stick it on ebay and see what it gets. I really have no idea what to ask for it...especially to a mate.

going by your Sig you've already decided its going in the 1.6 ? B)

At least if you do so it can be tried out by any prospective buyers, but as a complete package probably worth more than split up as the ecu isn't a favoured one due to its limitations on who is willing/able to map it.

Can't you just give it to me? I really want a more powerful engine but am poor.

errrmmm...NO!

Whilst i'm unsure of its value its worth more than nothing!

The plan was to allways fit it in my 1.6 rally car but i keep finding other things to do and with a 1.6 in it its a good starter car which i hire out occasionally.

Maybe by putting the 1.9 engine above in it it would give the car more increase in value than the engine would being sold on its own.

Hey matey,

I had the same thing with my 1.9 mi16; having built it myself I know exactly what it cost me but the simple answer is no-one in their right mind would give me what I feel I'd want for it - which is why I keep it as a spare (this Longman S16 isn't going to last forever with the ragging I give it!). To replace it to the known quantity it is to me would be the best part of £2k, and it's quite simply worth that to me even if it's only worth £600-800 to someone else.

Like you say, without a warranty, a rolling road report and/or being able to see it as running people are always going to argue down its value

Keep it - you're in the business, you've got the contacts to put it out there to someone who will truly value it, or else keep it as a spare or run it in the hire car.

My old Skip Brown blueprinted Grp.N 1900 lump went for a token £50, despite it being a top built, reliable and standard motor. You'd have thought it worth something more than that, but no ;)

Is this a Gti-S conversion then?

It sounds like it although there is no mention of blue printed bottom end, high lift camshaft, gas flowed head or oil coooler.

How many miles has it done?

Having onwed a Gti-S for 4 years and done around 60k miles with it, I really like this engine and I imagine this will be even better with TBs.

If I still had the 205, TBs on the Gti-S would be the way to go IMHO!

If you have invoices phone Dell at SBC and she can hopefully give you the exact spec of the engine from their records.
