Standard Rallye beam (base model) with some spax shocks, will be on a rebuilt 1.6 GTI one in the new year. Will prop cut the just the lip off or something, may do the same on the front. Solve it once and for all.

not to this extreme,then?

My "improved method" didn't work out so the n/s was done with the same method. I would recommend drilling all the holes for fixings before cutting - whilst it has more strength.

Et Voila! without TSWs

Front ride height to be raised and wheels painted and job will be done

Its not needed to cut that much out is it? You'v done a very tidy job though, with the entire car as well, you really would never know!

What have you done about stopping rusting on the newely cut edges?

Cheers, Ali

I think that's the least cutting needed to fit the gti arches. Good old smooth hammerite should take care of the rust proofing. It wasn't a difficult decision to butcher a base shell, I'd be more wary with a Rallye - love 'em with euro Rallye arches, though

Indeed, this is my dilemma I don't want to make a hash of it and ruin the original (very tidy rot free) shell! Although Jonnygoodhand did cut his up. The Rallye arches do look great and a bit silly without cutting the arch underneath. Think I might just go for it and man up!

I half considered just getting some compmotive TH wheels in 5.5j so they may fit under, but I can't spend that much on wheels and I really like the S2 steels.

Cheers, Ali

Good job.

Is it me or does the back wheel look like its sticking out and the arch trim look not quite right ?

I did, but I'm not sure I'd do it again. When I put the car back on 106 S1 Rallye wheels (5.5J), it really felt alive and I'd be tempted to stick with the standard shell/slim wheel combination in the future.

Was this the white one that was slightly lowered and on white pepperpots?

I really liked it before, it looked clean and simple.

That's the car, I liked it best in thart guise, too and it was fine for light use but wouldn't carry any sort of weight without rubbing the rear arches. When I removed the blue stripes from the sides the n/s had had paintwork upto the coachlines and new lines applied on top which left an unsightly ridge. There was also an "elastic" dent in the door that the trims splint quite effectively :) Some paint on the driver's door had recently started lifting also, leaving cherry red showing through - obviously a replacement s/h door. It's as much an economic decision TBH - spend hard cash on the 1.1 or use that cash to put fuel in the 1.9?

I could do with your advice. I need to do this to the front arches, how much would you surgest? I have rallye arches with 1900 wheels and lowered 40mm

If you put discs on the back, the beam will be narrower. Alternatively, what about a Skip Brown negative camber kit. I ran 185/60/14 tyres on my XS that was stupidly low at the back with no catching problems

I would trial fit up the arches and see how much you can afford to lose and chop that off.

Alternatively, what about a Skip Brown negative camber kit.

SBC negative camber kit would likely make things worse rather than better, seeing as the way it is done involves widening the track slightly using longer stub axles and a spacer wedge between the trailing arm and caliper mounting bracket.

I'm interested in how that kit works, as unless I'm missing something all the wedge plate does is line up the caliper bracket, and there must be a wedge sleeve or something to alter the angle of the stub axle in relation to the arm to gain any negative?

Dont forget Steve, it NEEDS a Gti rear Vallance. (Or however you spell it!)

I will be getting a rebuilt beam of Anth next month so discs could be an option, what combination would that be? Disc brake parts on a 1.6 beam?

Disk parts on a 1.6 beam = 1.9 beam ;)
