Turbo Rebuild

Recommended Posts

peter

As most of you probably know the turbos on these engines done last five minutes when a less restrictive exhaust is fitted.

So i was wundering if anyone has had a go at rebuilding one?

I think i remember somone mentioning stepped seals but i cant find any info on this.

I have two turbos that are beyond repaid but i have got hold of another that smokes a bit so the plan is to rebuild it before fitting with stepped seals and stopping the smoking issue.

However i have never rebuilt a turbo before so im not quite sure what to expect, i have dismantled one but i cant see where the seals or rebuild parts would go.

The next question is what rebuild kit would work for these turbos?

thanks

How do you define a restrictive exhaust? Mine runs a standard 205 GTI cat, a middle box and a Magnex at the back and has been perfectly fine for well over 3.5 years.

Rebuilding turbos requires balancing doesn't it otherwise the bearings fail. Take some pics along the way. There are various guides to rebuilding turbos on the net. http://www.sr20-forum.com/forced-induction...-pic-heavy.html is just one of them

Only the rotating parts are balanced - the shaft and wheels. If you mark the orientation of the end bolts, put them back exactly, and don't mix and match shafts and wheels from different turbo then you can put them back together and they'll still be balanced.
