How Noisy Is Your Oil Pump?

Recommended Posts

Mad Scientist

Yesterday I had my car on some ramps to sort some bits out. When it was idling and my head was by the sump, I noticed how noisy the oil pump was.

I can only describe it as a "gears" type noise. Pretty sure its the oil pump, as its from that end.

I'm running a diesel pump (larger internal gears) with the 6 bar spring and a new piston.

Its actually an S16 block, if this makes any difference. Has the "splash" guard fitted and has the keyed large sprocket on the crank.

Oil pressure is fine, being 40psi at hot idle and 70psi at around 3-4k.

Is this normal, or is project Pascal the Peugeot going to get ripped apart again???!??!?!

Its been mentioned before (by mad professor iirc) ages ago but considering its a chain driven pump that is contained in the sump its probably just the normal amount of noise.

Maybe its not quite lined up correctly but are you sure the diesel pump has a larger gear than the GTI-6?

I recently posted the list of XU & XUUD crank pinions but the pump cog is the same on all pumps I have which includes a GTi-6 & diesel on iirc.

Isn't it a mix and match pump that you have built?

If its not in line the only way to find out is take the sump off

But you did say my 6 sounded similar but my 1.8 wasn't as loud as that

You need to have a bit more faith in your engine building skills! You've done a fantastic job of it!

If you do lose pressure switch it off and we will sort it out.(if Rach gives me permission :) )

Graham,

It's not the drive gears that are larger. They are as the gti6. It's the internal pump gears that are larger.

I'm sure it's lined up correctly. I'll see what it's like when warm tonight.

Thanks,

Pete

Which diesel is it from because service box list the same pump part number for all XU engine 205's, petrol or diesel & also on the 1.9d 306 engines.

It's from a 406 2.1td. I found it whilst extracting the crank!
