Winter Thermostat

Recommended Posts

It has been suggested to me that I need to install a winter thermostat in my 1.9 lump to get the automatic choke to turn off earlier (I've been having high revs and the engine is slow to warm up).

Does anyone have any ideas as to whether its necessary or if it'll work?

they don't open until 88deg anyway. Or do you mean an oil thermostat?

there is no "choke" on these engines as such, simply a supplementary air device that closes further the longer the ignition is on, as well as how warm the engine gets.

for example if you start up and drive away the engine will warm up much quicker, and the valve close quicker.

if the thermostat is working properly it'll regulate the temperature regardless of climate (to a point, as long as the radiator and cooling fans are in fine fettle)

Not oil Henry - he was talking about water. TBH, I think he's guessing. I've just down a 10-15 minute run round McDonalds and whilst sitting in the drive-in, the idle hovered (unsteadily) around 1000. Still no sign of the temp gauge rising though.

As far as I know, both rad and fan are working properly.
