Halfords And Similar Jumpstarter Packs - Any Good Or Rubbish?

Recommended Posts

Are these jump starters any good or cheap crap?

Link

They can be bought on eBay even cheaper.

It needs to be man enough for a 205.

Many thanks

Can't speak for that particular one but had a similar one a few years back, it had a compressor built in which packed up after a few months of very little use and when i eventually needed to start the car with it, it was a miserable fail. Would not even turn the engine over.

you do need to keep them topped up if you want to be able to rely on them, that goes for either end of the price scale.

I just get a spare battery from the scrapyard for a tenner and use jump leads ^_^

I have experienced 2 of these exact ones (one was mine and one was my Dads). What a load of s*it!!! They had trouble jump starting anything that I've owned, went flat in no time at all, and when I used the tyre inflator the switch burnt out and I couldn't turn it off ^_^

Avoid like rabies

ive had a few of these over the years so

the one you llinked to dont bother the ones for about 20 quid dont bother

what you have to look for is the size/capacity of the battery in the thing.

i now have a halfords own brand one {think its model 3000] and its great only things to watch are short leads and its very, very.heavy due to the battery but has started a diesel transit with a flat battery.

Never let them get too cold, it kills them. Keep them topped up, or they are useless.

I have a battery from a merc sprinter van, I keep it topped up via a slow charge and use jump leads when I need it.

I took a more expensive one on the Mongol rally with me, it served its purpose.

I have a good 12-24v one at work. Very good and would keep turning over a problematic 24v truck for some time. You get what you pay for.

Thanks chaps, some very useful feedback. I don't need one often enough to warrant spending the required £100 for a decent one. The battery idea is a good one which I hadn't thought of.

I sell those ones at work (Carplan branded but same product) and they aren't really much cop. I had to call the police out to the shop when someone wanted to get a refund on it he felt that... desperate.

If you do want one I can get any of the Ring powerpacks much cheaper than online so let me know if any take your fancy.

My good friend (mechanic) went through 3 or 4 cheap ones before buying his snap on one, lasted years - just changed the battery and its like new. I know this doesn't help much as your not after a £200 pack, whats wrong with some jump leads!? I'm assuming you would have access to another car when needed?

Just a quick comment on jump leads, they need to be good quality and a good size. Your never going to start a car with a dead battery on tiny leads, I have some I made up myself. Over the top thicker than your thumb, but will start anything with ease if the doner battery is up to it that is.

I have used cheap packs in the past and as iam in the motor trade they have not really worked well when used regularly.I got a snap on one last year which starts bloody anything but last week the battery gave up, think my mate jumped his gsxr 750 with it and now stinks of eggs.

The only one which was ok and not too bad price was a big red one from Machine Mart or possibly costco. Just to compare the snap on is 1700 and 900 continous cranking.

I use one identical to the halfords one, it must be about 3-4 yrs old now and still works. The jump pack side of it quit ages ago, it was only when I took it apart to fit a new compressor hose lead that I found it's connections had rattled loose! Re-connected and it's fine again!!

It's not the best thing in the world, it'll only jump smaller engines with less compression tbh, but you can't expect much for the £60 odd I think it was, I mainly use it for the air compressor out on events. But saying that, it's outlived 2 much more expensive ones my old work hav so can't be bad!!

Just to add, it does need looking after, but not over-charged! I generally only whack mine on charge when I know it's had or going to have some serious use and it probably gets more if a hard life than most tbh!

I've got a Halfords one and its been fine. One thing you have to watch for is that its got a battery voltage sensor to stop you operating it with the leads back to front. This means that if it can't detect the right volts it won't work so if the battery's totally flat it won't even try and start the car. Sometimes I needed a mains charger to bring the volts up enough to allow the battery pack to start the car...

I know its a little off topic but >

I was thinking of getting one of these starters because my 6 battery went totally dead after a month off road in the garage. The thing is i tried to use leads to jump start it with another car but it took over half an hour for it to start. This was last Monday yet when i tried today it was flat again even after letting the car charge for over an hour last Monday and the battery is only a year old.

Now i dont think i need to buy one of these if the battery needs replacing, does anyone think my battery need replacing ?

It was a Halfords one.
