Gearbox Problems

Recommended Posts

Peetypug

went for a drive today with my newly converted 6 engine, i've done around 50 miles since the conversion

anyway, after about 10 miles i started to find it hard to get into gear

firstly it was 2nd, then 3rd, then all gears, pulled over and checked the clutch cable (the pedal had gone very easy to press) it had slackened off quite a bit (both nuts were in place and tight against each other) it was fitted correctly and nothing had come loose

i tightened it back up and was able to get home, all was well, pulled fine, gears were still hard to select but could still select them bar reverse, which i couldnt select with the car running

on first inspection it just seems the cable has stretched (if thats possible) just been out to get some things out of it and there is gearbox oil all over the drive ;)

cant really tell where from in the dark but it seems to be in the general area of the speedo drive

i didnt replace the drive shaft oil seals when i did the conversion as they seemed fine

would low oil make it hard to select gears?

this couldnt cause the cable to slacken off though could it?

there has been no sign of an oil leak until tonight

i will be collecting the new DS oil seals and a clutch cable tomorrow

any other ideas what it could be

thanks

I'll bet you a pack of hob nobs the engine to box bolts have worked loose, so when you press the clutch it is pushing the engine and box apart instead of releasing the clutch. Also it has moved enough to pull one of the shafts out hence the gearbox oil on the floor.

could that have caused the cable to go slack?

i suppose if the lever isnt returning fully then it could, but then after i had tightened it wouldnt the clutch have been slipping?

as for the hob nobs, chocolate ones are my favorite as well, so you may only recieve half a pack with all the chocolate licked off ;)

Yes it will, depending how far the box may of fallen off, it's either that or the clutch breaking up

I had this when i first got mine. The car was hard to get in gear, went outside the next day to have a look and found gearbox oil all over the floor, i noticed that there was a bolt missing which held the box and engine together and the rest were loose so tightened them all up and a week later the input shaft sheared off ;)

either as Tom said, or as Miles said, could be a collapsed release bearing.

release bearing was one of my thoughts, but its not noisy at all

will be going out in a bit to have a look at the mess!

Cheers Jon

Wanted to go out to start on it today, but Rach had other ideas!

Apparently a wooden floor and a wall papered chimney breast was far more importance ^_^

at least I now have tomorrow all to myself, mark is coming over as well

infinity votes for box bolts, they only have to be a bit loose and engagement gets very difficult...

It has happened to me NUMEROUS times, threadlock is your friend.

Result !

Either threadlock them in, but you need to get the threads in the block 100% clean and oil/grease free for it to work properly, or otherwise get hold of some Nordlock washers in M10, these things are really good.

Also, check that the dowels are present in the box - if they're not, then that seems to worsen the issue with the gearbox bolts coming loose significantly. They shouldn't really need to be threadlocked IMO, but certainly it won't do any harm.

Had similar issues with mine Pete when we went the Lakes earlier this year. Bolt by the clutch arm had come loose and was stopping the arm from fully opening. Changing was a pig until Mark spotted that one.....
