At Last..mot Passed

Recommended Posts

Finally, after 9 months in the making, my PUG has passed its ffirst MOT under my ownership. Since last week, I have been using her as a daily driver to and from work and have noticed a few things:

Her idling speed seems very high. I only drive two miles to work and have noticed that my temperature gauge never rises above zero but I know it works as i drained the water system a while back and forgot to refill it when I was running the engine pre-MOT. Thankfully, I saw the needle shoot to red and promptly switched off and let it cool down. My question then is:

how long should it take for the temperature gauge to rise and where should it settle when warm? Also, as it seems slow to rise/warm would this mean that my automatic choke is causing the idling speed to stay high (about 2000 revs usually)?

What is the correct idle in revs?

Is a 1.9 normally very loud in the cab? I have a standard bosal exhaust but it seems very noisy without the radio on. I intend to dampen the cab eventually by padding behind the panels so where all should I consider padding?

Thanks in advance and btw the car is a 1990 1.6 with a 1.9 lump inside.

Unless youre sitting in bumper to bumper traffic for the 2 miles to work i wouldnt expect your temp gauge to move, they do take a little while to warm up and the weather is getting cooler

Depends what you mean loud? Compared to modern cars probably is. I have a bosal exhaust on mine too and it's alright. Just check it isn't blowing out at the joints and it's sealed well with a smear of exhaust paste [mid section to rear silencer]. To quiten it down abit I put underfelt underneath the rear seats as well. Old carpet would do the same job. Have you got a rear parcel shelf in and the boot floor mat and underfelt in place?

As regards to idle I was able to set mine to 850rpm but anything between that and 1000 would be acceptable imo. Has the cars co been set up with a co meter and the ignition timing set with a decent timing light to the correct degrees? Worth getting that done and then set the co, once the car has been up to temperature and the fans have kicked in to cool it. A good drive before you do it is ideal so everythings up to temperature.

What colour are the injectors on the car yellow or blue, as I see the car has had a conversion?

Cheers folks,

I have the parcel shelf and a skinny rear leatherish mat in the boot (no padding though so that's a good idea and I never though of under the rear seats).

Please explain CO to the unwashed ;) And what are the correct degrees as I'm unsure if anyone has ever used a strobe on it.

Injectors are yellow btw and I take it 2000 revs is too high?

At idle 2000 is too high. 1200-1400ish on warm up then settle down to around 1000 or less. You'd need someone to have a look at it, could even be an air leak somewhere in the system, hard to know without seeing the car.

Co is for emissions. If you get the ignition timing set correctly, can't remember what it is but it's in the haynes manual which also gives you a good bit of info, and then set the emissions using the adjusting screw on the airflow meter.

Cheers mate - I have the Haynes courtesy of a mechanic friend so maybe I'll see if he can have a go.

You drive two miles to work?!?!?!!?

Get a bike, short journeys are no good for cars anyway, and it's cheaper!

Haha, fair enough. I would do the same.....for a bit. Make sure you go out on week ends and give it a long hard pasting :o Although I'm sure you don't need to be told that :)

You'll be getting fuel consumption that would make a Lamborghini owner wince doing 2 mile trips, especially with the idle up at around 2K.

I know, I work a mile and a bit from home and do occasionally take the car in if my knees aren't up to pushing the pedals round. I struggle to get better than high teens MPG then I do.

Normally takes 15 mins or so to get mine up to temp.

Not sure why it should be so noisy, probably worht checking that the exhaust is healthy, no holes and the baffles aren't just rattling around in the bottom of the silencer.

You are running the standard air filter and induction pipework aren't you?

I seem to remember I think Welshpug saying Bosal rear silencers are a little louder. Definitley put some underlay/ deadening under that flimsy mat.

On my 1.6 the Bosal exhaust sounded just right imo. I also had a 1.6 box on my 1.9, and yes I too found it noisy espesially compaired to modern standards.

I dont mind Bosal and prefer the peashooter pipe to a large bore. So the 1.6 rear silencer is louder?

I think that was Pugtorque that said that of Bosal systems, the 1.6 and 1.9 systems are the same.

Cheers folks - I agree about the fuel consumption and it's only been on the road for a week.

The exhaust is brand new and it has been suggested to me by two in-laws (who know a lot more than I do about cars) that the exhaust may be too highly mounted and one of the rubbers appears to be perished. the car was previously lowered and the mountings may have taken a knock or two in their time.

The exhaust system is brand new and whilst the car body is a 1.6, it has the 1.9 lump installed by a previous owner. I don't have the standard air filter sytem as it has a K&N installed so that at least accounts for a bit of the noise - I must source a second-hand one in the Wanted section.

Due to being away from my normal place of work this week (I'm using my vectra), I haven't driven it for more than 20 minutes at a pop but as I said, the temp gauge has yet to rise from zero so I really do need to get her out for a proper rip and then see if it idles below 1000 when warmed up. If it doesn't, I have a mechanic neighbour who should hopefully sort her out with the strobe.

Thanks again

Paddy
