Stem Seals

Gents , please , need some input from those who did this with the head on ...

I'm on mega crappy budget atm , so , would like to try replacing the seals without the removing the head .. i'm familiar with the procedure ,did this on some other engines, but never on a XU yet ...

Obviously , will need to fabricate tool for compressing the springs - any spec. recommendations on this ?

.. also , easy job or a hard one with the head on ? .. suppose it'll be a little bit tricky cos the valve springs are kinda hard and deep down the head ... proper designed tool for spring compressing is a must me thinks ..

Failing that , will "forget about this" for a while until it really goes bad , till then will collect some money for head removal job ..

Thanks !

Damir ;)

Not done this job with the head on either but I vaguely remember a post recently about this and this tool was mentioned

Universal valve spring compressor

but for the cost of that tool you could take the head off and do the job!!!!

Yes , buying ready made tool is out of the question i'm afraid ;) , so , really looking at some fabricated DIY version (if someone did a DIY tool for this ..) .. i'm kinda good with welding so that shouldn't be a problem .. just dunno which shape would do the best with least slipping off and stuff like that which will make job more fiddly/complicated .

It would be easy anough to make a tool. You would just need like a T shape so you can push on the top of it and weld a strong washer to the bottom of it should do the job allright. My father has made up a tool like this and it does the job.

But , i'm thinking how/where's the best spot to support the tool on the head base in order to make it stable and sturdy enough to compress the spring ;) though , IIRC there was a few threaded holes at the back of the valve cover base , so might fabricate some kind of hooks and wound them inside and use this for the tool base ..

Will try to experiment a little bit on my spare engine first ..

If anyone has a picture of DIY made tool , don't be ashamed to post it ! i , most certainly will when i made it ..

I dont have a pic of a tool but if you can find a pic of a bench mounted spring compressor you'll be on the right lines with one of them. Basically you can put some threaded bar down the head bolt holes and then clamp the tool to that then just have a handle on a simple lever and something open on the other end so you can get the collets out.

Sorry that was a bit vauge, you should be able to make the whole thing from some tube and box section though.

Damir, i know your a ways away, but if the cost of postage isnt too much i could always send you a spare valve spring compressor i have lying around? I have 2, never use them, might save you on fabricating half of what you need to?
