Was travelling along the motorway yesterday, homeward bound, and noticed the oil pressure guage was fluttering all over the place and then it dropped, the warning light came on and the stop light came on so i swung onto the hardshoulder.

As i jumped out and glanced over my right hand shoulder to check the coast was clear i noticed a huge trail of oil following the direction of the car.

I popped the bonnet and was immediately hit by a smell of burnt oil and OMG what a state the engine bay was in.......

After looking around i immediately noticed the oil feed to the top of the rocker cover had came off and obviously been pumping the oil all over the engine.....

Luckily i always carry some oil, water and some handy tools in my boot, just incase of such emergencies, and felt so lucky.....

So after i fixed the problem and filled it up oil i had everything crossed hoping i have'nt done any damage.

And after i started it up and waited for a while, i was so pleased to find i had no issues with the engine, other than being coated with oil.....

The moral of the story is always be prepared ..........

That's not an oil feed, it's a breather pipe. So Maybe your breathers are blocked or need attention ?

It happens this time of the year :D

I'd be more concerned with having dumped oil all over the motorway personally - did you contact anyone about it to get it cleaned up, or just leave it there causing a hazard?

Ah, that's OK then - given the lack of mention in the initial post I feared that you'd just fixed the car and driven off! :D

Was there any fallout from the incident with the police, getting billed for the cleanup or anything like that?

was just writing about the problem i had, im not saying the thought of driving off went through my head but as i ride a bike from time to time i couldnt just drive off as i hate coming off a bike, especially when its from oil or diesel on the road.

the police said i maybe liable for costs, but they did say thankyou for reporting it and hopefully being so thoughtful i may not have to pay anything, but only time will tell......

well one of the coppers spent most of the time taking pics on his iphone and commenting on how nice the car was and that he hasn't seen a 205 for ages.

At least you shouldn't have to worry about rust in the engine bay for a while :D

Crude French rust prevention techniques still working their best :)

My TU did this last year, the oil catch tank breather pipe was too small (new catch tank) and this blew the rocker cover, as yours did covering the engine bay in oil and the front valance! later on in the year as a result of a hefty hit from a rabbit and the radiator being bent back a little the alternator fan cut through the bottom hose and it pissed its water out! I didn't notice untill the temp guage started rising (a guage I had just fitted!) I bought a massive bottle of water and stopped every so often to cool the engine down until I got to my mates (mechanic) place!

Sounds like you were very prepared and lucky!

I had a similar issue once where the rocker cover gasket had blown, there was oil p*ssing all over the exhaust manifold. Nice big clouds of smoke down the motorway where the oil was being burnt :)
