406 Hdi90

OK just got myself a new job which has a 70 mile daily commute. It is Head Office based so car would not be going to clients.

I have a 2007 Mondeo 2.2 TDCi which whilst being a superb car is unnecessary for my requirements any more, so thought I would release some equity by selling the Mondeo and getting myself a 9-12 year old 406 Hdi90. Looking at mileages in the region of 90-130K on them and there are some really well prices examples out there.

Question I have is how bomb proof are these cars? Would they last me for say a two year spell and does anyone have direct experience of what they are like to own?

Oh and does anyone fancy a stunning Mondeo? :)

I owned a '99 hdi 90 a few years ago. I bought it with about 100k on the clock. I did about 50k over 2 years with no problems at all, just basic servicing. Then at the 2 year mark, a core plug went, waterpump went and lower pulley needed replacing (I'm assuming at least some of these were related!). To be fair, when I bought it, it was due a cambelt and as I wasn't intending on keeping it for 2+ years I was tight and didn't get the waterpump replaced at the same time. Lower pulley is a well documented weakness I found out afterwards.

Still, overall it was a very good car. The ride is amazing in these cars imo. Quite well built too. About 45mpg average. Handled quite well considering how comfy it was. It was incredibly slow though - on the way home from picking it up, I had to pull over and check the floor mat wasn't caught underneath the throttle pedal! No - it really was pushed as far as it would go. I did get used to it though, and the hdi engine was quite smooth (or well insulated anyway) and had little turbo lag. Very large boot on the saloon, nice and spacious inside, good "french" seats too.

I'd definitely have another one anyway.

why not get a older 406 a 2.1?

i have had one for 2 years quite fast does very good mpg cruises at 80 under 3000 revs and as mine is the exective model has lots of toys.

less teck stuff to go wrong eg no comms2000 and no dual mass flywheel/clutch.you will pick up a tidy model for a few 100 pounds but budget about 300 to replace the cam belt ,water pump, bottom pully and fanbelt.these last 2 items are well know weakspots on this car.then all you have to do then is sitback and enjoy.

I think the 90s don't, but the 110s do.

Yep the 90's are a solid mass flywheel whereas the 110 is a dual mass flywheel.

Anyway why not commute in the 205?

Even allowing for the dual mass dlywheel etc I'd aim for a 110 hdi if you were looking for one but like Omega said, why not go for a 2.1 TD?

We have a 2.1 TD at work thats done 225k on an S plate but just keeps on slogging away, probably the car at work which needs least doing to it.

Graham.
