Oh S**t, I Broke The Bit That Holds The Cam In Place

Recommended Posts

i managed to brake the bit that holds the cam in, the bit that the oil spray bar pushes in to, and has 2 11mm bolts to hold it down, i need one desperately, can anyone tell me if they are all the same on all engines, i have a 2.0l 8v turbo engine, or can i get one out of a normal xu engine

I have a horrible feeling that they're line-bored to the head, and thus you can't just get another one.

If you broke it, chances are that you either were putting it on back to front, or you muddled the caps up - they must stay in order and round the right way, otherwise, well, you break them....

tbh for the expense and hassle of replaceing the head i'd just get another cap from someone breaking a 1.6 enigine and stick it on it.

Yeah they may well be line bored as a set but personally i can't see the tolerances being far out on using another one. When you fit the repalcement cap just check there is no obvious lip where the cap meets the head and away you go.

then at some later point just replace the head when you can be arsed

thats what i'd do if it were me

Yes they are lined bored and I remember when a mate of mine who now works for K tech(Renault tuner) stuck another cap on and rung me asking why the cam would not turn as he didn;t know this, You maybe lucky and find one that fit's OK but it really is luck so I;d get a few and try them but check it by hand first and then after a couple of hundred miles to see if it's picking up

As said the caps are paired to head however when I worked for a pug dealer many moons ago we used to fit the odd one,the diesels were not uncommon for cracking them when refitting a cam or if belt breaks

If you can find someone who can line bore them for you, you could fit a replacement with its mating surface ground down so the hole is oval, and send the cutter/grinder through, restoring the hole back to round.

its how conrods and main bearing caps are restored IIRC.

having said that, it's a lot of work and only really worthwhile if its a worked over head and probably not cost effective given how cheap you could pick up a replacement head.

well i've got a 1.6 in the 205 at the mo, so i'll just take one out of that when i take the engineout, fingers crossed that will do the trick, i could do with out stripping the head down again
