Cleaned My Mi Block

Recommended Posts

backroadpug

Hi all Ive just stripped down my mi block to fit new shells and rings, And with it now bare Ive decided to clean it up ready for painting.

Took hours to clean up and its still not perfect but what a difference.

I was going to paint it red but after seing it cleaned up think im just going to go silver, also i had all the ancilaries powder coated red and black so red might have been a bit much.

Whats every one think on colour and whats the best paint to use?

Cheers Richard

In my opinion, don't paint it, it never takes well to alloy blocks, and seems to flake and look poor really easily. Leave it bare alloy for me.

i painted mine 5 years ago and its covered 10k and the paint is fine if cleaned properly. only flaking i have is on my gti6 box as wasn't cleaned very well before painting so think this really depends on the paint used

I pained mine about 5 years ago too, and it still looks good. You have to get the metal super clean first though.

Get the proper engine enamel too - preferably the brush-on stuff rather than the spray - and it'll last ages.

mine was brushed on too you will never get the perfect finish if looked at very close but unless its a show car and not and everyday car is anyone really going to notice?

I used hammerite thinned down and sprayed on my last race engine.

Really strong coating. Easily cleaned. No worries with the heat or fluids attacking it.

Silver.

Red = too garish

Black = you'll never see any leaks that may (will?) occur

Having seen the pics above, i'd definately go silver

I've had the flaky paint problem on my MI engine before, so i'd be interested to know what you use and how it comes out.

Silver, I'd leave the block as it is after cleaning one recently for mty engine buyild that had been painted before which I only discovered when I attacked it with gunk & a wire brush.

Thankfully not much is one show when its in the car so I'm leaving it as it is.

I've never used Gunk before - is it any good?

I've mostly used the degreasers i have for my motorbike...

It did its job & removed most of the dirt but that was paired with a steam pressure washer to give it an extra edge.

Thanks, I was thinking about it for cleaning some stubborn motorbike parts. A trip to the shops is in order, both for the Gunk and the pressure washer!

Gunk used to be amazing, but they changed the formula a few years ago and the new stuff is nowhere near as good.

I normally just use diesel or white spirit now as it's much cheaper.
