Recommended Posts

right after much thought and the simple fact that i dont wont to sell her i have decided to start collecting the parts needed to take the xy8 out and put in a tu out of a vtr. I know im gonna need a subframe but which one is best for this engine. and i also know im gonna need the tu top mount that im gonna have to weld into the left hand inner wing ( does anybody have a rotten shell who would like to cut out and sell me this mount) i know im gonna need the full vtr drive train but is there anythink else im gonna need to get the engine in between the wings e.g. a lowwer mount or is this on the subfr gear linkage and things like this anyhelp would be much apreciated thanks all

Its not worth it mate! I know you don't want to hear it. If your serious then indeed you will need to weld in the engine mount and get it inspected by some sort of egineer. I'm not too clued up on sub frames but GTI ones are different to TU in that the gear linkage bracket is in a difference place and it has a ARB. I don't know whether a XY sub frame is the same as a TU, might well be then you won't have to change it. If your going for a TU then go for a XS, 1.3 106 or maybe a 106 XSI engine as these are amongst the best (ali block) and very tunable.

Or just save yourself the trouble and get an XS  (if you can find a tidy one!)

I'd say keep it as it is, or sell it on.

By the sounds of it, you've already got an XS, the XY8 is the older XS engine, same as that found in the Talbot Samba Rallye.

If you want to go TU, buy a Rallye, You'll be lucky to find a decent XS these days.

If you are going to do it, id recomend just buying a newer shell... it would make the whole thing much easier.

Careful, there where 2 type of TU shell - and the engine mount changes! As long as the car is 1990 or later you should be fine. From '88 to approx 1990 the mount was slightly different.

the reason i am chosing this engine is because of emence avaliable parts be they tuning or oem i am sick and tired of trying so scorce anythink for the xy8 thats init (apart from water pumps there seems to be millions on ebay) a freind of mine has just rotrexed his vtr and it pulls 265bhp on the dyno now maybe in the future i may charge mine but these engines are quite capable of 150 to 160 n/a this plus 205 handerling would make an ideal everyday car that i have to drive from kent to london in everyday pluss i have there is a spare nitrous bottle sitting in my garage left over from my dads 57 chevy build which may just find its way into the boot :o and befor people start saying why bother just buy a gti the £4500 insurance quote is just not even entertainiable but i reali do apreciate all your help and knowlage of these cars and i dare say a few more brains will be racked befor the car is finished thanks everyone x

You think it will cost less than that to insure a VTR engined 205 with Nos?

Like all good plans mine seems to have a floor. My "1.1 tu donor car " turns out to be another xy engined 1.3 gr ( FML) but every cloud has its silver and all and although its only a 1290, rather than my 1360 it is a one owner 27,000 mile car been allround this car and its emaculate no rust interiour (blue phase 1) is although dusty as left the factory so im thinking of buy as a parts car what do people think atleast i can put this 1300 while rebuilding my 1400 seems like a lot less work for me but with a better outcome and no telling the insurance company lies .

All seems a bit daft to me.

I'd just wait for a TU XS to come up (assuming that is what you want)
