Struggling To Fit Starter Motor!

Recommended Posts

grantley1988

Is there a knack to fitting a starter motor?

I have a 406 turbo lump in the 205 with a be1 lift up box which i assume comes with the 406 engine.

The starter motor which i took of was a slimline valeo unit and the one i am trying to put on is a standard 205 starter? Is this my problem?

I was told all xu starter units should fit.....

I can get the starter to line up with the bolts and start to torque up to of the bolts but then the starter starts to push away from the box.

Do i have to line the teeth up with the flywheel? Or am i just not trying hard enough?

The only thing that makes me think the starter will not fit is on the valeo one it has a slight curve on the housing which you bolt to the box but on the 205 one its very straight, But the holes are the the same distance from each other on both starters?

Sorry for all the questions and rambling but i just one the 205 going again :D

You haven't got two dowels fitted in the same place have you?

One on the new starter & one in the gearbox?

There should be one dowel for the middle of the three bolts iirc.

Graham.

I have took the dowel of the help with the fitting! There is not one in the box.

I have a spare gearbox and both the starters line up on that but on the car they do not seem to line up?

i will take a pic of what i think the problem is..

The one on the left is the 406 one which was on the car and the right one is what i am trying to fit.

The teeth are showing on the left but are not on the right one. I think this is my problem????

The one on the right is the wrong starter imo & won't fit.

Are you sure what car it was removed from or just taking the breakers yard word?

You need a dowel fitted btw.

Graham.

as you found out, you can't retro fit the old larger bodied starters from alloy XU blocks to iron blocks.

the staters are probably the same, lucas, bosch etc modified the cog in the centre so it fits a hell of a lot more cars then they should, have a look on the lucas website, might be some help to you
