Recommended Posts

I have to replace a a timing belt, tensioner and water pump. I have gone to but this item for my 1.6 gti (XU). The seller had find two diferent tensioner and belt for 1.6 engine. So, I have to find find which engine have I got. Which way can I choose? The number of teeth on pully on the camshaft are maybe diferent? Or some another diferent?

On the engine isn't a plate with engine number and I hadn't gor any document of engine. I have only a engine.

Thank you

If it's a 1.6 GTi engine, it will have the 113 tooth belt and spring-loaded tensioner setup.

If you're unsure, just check the tensioner type fitted - spring tensioner = 113 tooth belt, and escentric tensioner = 114 tooth belt.

Ok...thank you very much...

The pulley on camshaft ond cfank shaft are the same with equal nuber of teeth?

If I buy one kit (pump, belt and tensioner) for example with 113 tooth....and I have now mounted a 114 tooth belt...I will can mount a 113 kit on engine...or it somewere some fiferent? I suppose the different is in mounting of tensioner?

What year is your car & engine code?

The crank & cam pulley are different sizes, you need to turn the crank twice for one turn of the cam.

The easiest way to check what type of tensioner you have is by reaching behind the r/h end of the block from above, under the #4 port on the exhaust manifold (engine cold & off) for the square drive & lock nut for the sprung tensioner.

The pages are extracted from the haynes manual for the how to in a zip file here which shows the two different types.

I don't think you can fit the later kit to the earlier engine with the engine in the car or even if the tapping in the block is there on all XU blocks.

afaik the 1.6 in a 205 did not get the later belt kit and tensioner, but will fit.

you may need to fit different covers however, so easiest to replace like for like.

pugtorque Thank you.....but the base of engine and how it's work I know. I hopet to exist some easier way (without taking off a cover off belt) to check which tensioner have I mount. I will take down a cover this weekend and a next week I will buy an item for change.

welshpug yes, yes...that't right. I will buy the same part like are now mounted and I will replace it.

Thank you
