Performance Cam Opinions Needed....

Recommended Posts

Dogboy

Hi all

I have done a search on here for some information on performance Cam information, but didn't feel like my thoughts had been completely answered, so....

I am after opinions/advice/thoughts on what Cam to choose for my 1.9 gti on 45webers. Gonna keep the bottom end standard and ultimately will get the head worked on but for now just gonna get new cam.

My personal choices are the Piper Ultimate Road Cam 285, or the Cat Cams road/rally Cam with 282 duration.

Can anyone give personal experiences/thoughts on these please?

For me, the only thing differentiating them at the moment is about £50 in purchase price, so really want to understand if there is one or the other that has really been a worthwhile purchase for anyone?

Many thanks in advance

Phil

Cam wise about the only company I would not use is Piper, there trading history isn;t great and you only have to see the amount of trading names they have had to give you an idea, Plus its the only camshaft I;ve seen snap a couple of time on the XU9J2's

You need to make some provision to raise the compression if not already done so to make the most of a wilder cam.

Also you need to check that whichever cam you choose will work with standard valve springs or not, as many that wild will have too much peak lift and will go coilbound, sometimes needing some work to the head so they can rotate due to the size of the lobes.

Ideally the cam would be chosen or specified to suit the porting work done, which works the other way too as they need to work together, same goes for the exhaust manifold.

I would go for a Newmans PH3. newmans cam.

Skim the head a little to raise CR to ~10:1 and fit a vernier pulley . Should give a nice spread of power throughout the rev range. Will run on standard springs etc too.

A freind of mine has also had good results with the piper 285, however it had a longmans head so that could be why.

I run a newmans PH4 which is awesome but requires double valve springs head mods and high compression ( 11.5-1). Makes a torquey engine though!
