Two General Technical Questions. Answers Please!

Got another couple of daft questions for you.

First of all I have decided not to laquer my newly powder coated alloys as in honestly cannot be bothered to rub them down. However i need to paint the centre caps to match. They are painted (BADLY) black at the moment and I need to strip the paint off. I was wondering if anyone on here has ever striped paint off of 1.9 alloy wheel centre caps and whats the best way? Will paint stripper melt them? I have tried picking the paint off bur its not very successful.

Next after my cutting out saga I found the Dizzy was knackered and it has now been reconditioned and the car is fine. However I have had to hard wire the fuel pump to be always on with the ignition as for some reason it its not coming on like it should. I dont know what controls the fuel pump but am I right in thinking the pump first comes on to pressure up the system and the stops. Then when you turn the car over it comes on again? Clearly this is not just down to the pump relay. Can anyone describe how this works for me?

Also realised I have another question. Before I got the dizzy done, when starting the car from cold it idled high and then the revs dropped when it was warm. It does not seem to do this now I have had the Dizzy reconned. Is this just down to the coolant sensor? As this is only a couple of months old or does something else help control this idle rate. The car idles rough now when cold but is fine when its warmed up.

Hope someone has answers!

Ref fuel pump.

On an 8v, under the steering column is the tachimetric (tachy) relay, which controls the FP.

That relies on a signal from the coil/ignition amp combo which is initially controlled by the ECU, which is ultimately commanded by the ignition system i.e. the key.

Therefore no ignition and no signal from ECU equals no fuel pump so is maybe the reason you've had to hardwire your FP. So I would suggest your relay or the relay wiring were or are at fault. You've just bypassed it.

The signal to the relay is basically a rev or tacho pulse, so in a crash if the engine cuts so does the FP.

Mi16s etc aren't that much different but the typically use a double relay system which is just switched on by the ECU. In practice though identical.

Thanks DrSarty thats helpful.

I presume that the coil/ignition amp combo only tell the pump to be on when the engine is running?

I am not even getting the signal to the pump to presurise the system when you do one click on the key. Do you know what gives this signal?

I have bypassed the system at the fuse box by removing the fuse and feeding a fused igntion live in. Do you know where in the wiring system this fuse is?

I think I will try the Tachy relay first. As the igniton system seems to be working well at the moment.

Re. Centre caps. I had a similiar issue once. I just used paint stripper from B&Q and it worked fine. No damage to the plastic. Try it on the back face first to test if you are worried. If all else fails, they are only 6 quid each brand new from Peugeot.
