Identifying A Failure

Recommended Posts

I was on the 3rd run of a hillclimb when the clutch cable turned really really had and couldn't downshift into 2nd. Manged to force it into 2 and drove further, but then clutch became rock hard and couldn't change gears any longer. Left it in 3rd and finished the stage with the engine pulling like it was running on 3 pots.

In regrouping engine died and wouldn't turn more than half a turn on the starter, waited for it to cool down and started with loud metallic noises like a few spanners in the sump rambling around. Waited a few more hours and turned the engine on again and the metallica noises were gone and only a knock remained. I can't tell where the knock is coming from but the engine is running smoothly and someone said the knock is not there when starting indicating that it's not the shells.

So... what could it be? Main bearings? Clutch plate? Gearbox? Main shells AND clutch plate?

I know I should just open it up and see, but left for the UK right after the race and it's killing me knowing I'm 2000 km from home and not knowing what happened to the car. Please advise.

Thanks,

Andrei

Hard to diagnose what it could be but I'd look at something clutch related more than engine due to the fact the clutch went solid & you couldn't change gear easily.

Sounds like it might be a broken flywheel maybe

At a guess I would say the clutch pressure plate has overheated and spectacularly failed jamming against bell housing.

I would not try starting or turning over until you have found out exactly what has gone wrong.before splitting box off pop the blank plates off and have a look inside
