Driveshaft Grommet/seal

Was just having a poke around under the 205 and found a seal that looks rather out of place! It's on the n/s side of the long driveshaft - I assume it's meant to be pushed into the housing on the left? I have tried but it doesn't want to go, the white 'teeth' don't give way for the seal to push in.

 

Any help greatly appriciated!

Probably just the dust seal/cover that afaik should sit in front of the seal to stop any crap getting in but not really needed.

Cut it off, no other model now uses them and as said don;t do much at all

have only ever seen one of these on all the gti's i've had and removed it aswell as seems to do nothing
