Different/newer Conversion For A Be1 Box

Recommended Posts

johnhenry

never really looked at gearbox stuff but i think mines out its last legs

im just looking into the options regarding replcaing it.

any boxes that mate well to it in peoples opinons? dont mind 5 or 6 speeds.

my thoughts we're

306 big petrols? 1.8s so 5 speeds

306gti6/rallye: will they fit?

206 box?

dont mind if its not pug? very open to suggestions that improve the car. im ideally looking for snappy acceleration but also able to have a decent motorway cruising ability?

Cheers

John

Simple option, Be3 from later cars.

even simpler but more expensive, just get it rebuilt.

hmm, i do love the gearing on them but im just concerned that without shelling out a fortune im going to have something thats showing its age/fragile as even the later ones be3's are still getting on abit!

They tend to be pretty good in my experience, i've used old 1.6 boxes on mi16/gti6 conversions and thrashed the hell out of them, never had one give up yet.

I don't think there's anything fundamentally wrong with a BE1 box that you'd go out of your way to fit a BE3 instead, but I'd ask someone like Miles the finer details.

most of the parts are identical anyway, so it wont be anything major especially if you aren't running big power.

The main problems in my experience are the selectors get worn and sloppy, and the clutch actuation wears so becomes stiff and then is heavy, nothing a proper rebuild won't sort but it all adds up and ends up being more costly than say whacking in a good be3 & clutch pedal.

The Be1 box in my Longman 8v is mint, has done 34k at the most, been rebuilt at some point too but the main point is it's night and day difference to an old worn one.
