Do I Lacquer My Powder Coated Alloys?

Recommended Posts

Weser

I have just had my 1.9 alloys powdercoated white. Luckily my girlfriends dad has a factory that does powdercoating. They look great. I only just got them sandblasted and painted but it took alot of the kerbing away :)

Now before I fit my tyres I dont know whether to lacquer the wheels first? Anyone had any experience with this? Or has done this and knows if it is a benifit?

Cheers

Powdercoating is like melting plastic all over your wheels and as such doesn't need laquer. I had mine PC'd two years ago and they still look sweet.

Ok great!!

So I take it brake dust does not affect them to much?

Powder coating is pretty resilient, however can chip as it is a bit brittle. Paint gives a smoother finish but needs lacquer.

I bought a set of Genuine Minilite Sport wheels for my A-H Sprite, and they were powder coated and lacquered.

Definitely gave them a deeper lustre and certainly lasted well. They also seemed to withstand the torture of tyres being taken on and off quite well.

I recently had the 205's wheels PC'd and they seem to have a good finish on them despite not being lacquered. I suppose it comes down to the quality of the PC as to how the finish looks and lasts.

Here's the Minilite - Probably this was when the wheels were about 3 years old (Nuts went rusty) :o

i would not bother as the powder coating is very hard wearing, well untill it has a chip etc.

i would have though brake dust would damage the laquer making it go yellow etc alot easyer than on the powder coating.

my wheels are just powder coated and look nice and shiney :) but the powder coating goes on very evenly meaning any imperfections in the wheels will show.
