Clio 172 Ph1

Recommended Posts

I think i've killed the work van so its all good news. We are going to be getting a Clio 172 to develop parts for and temporarily replace the van.

I know the basics about them, we are going for the ph1 but i'm not clued up on all the flaws and niggles to look out for.

The car we are first going to look at seems to have been well kept and has had a cambelt change and a few other sensors but as a few people on here have owned them I thought I would seek some knowledge....

all i remember about a mates clio is it had some dodgey sensor on the gearbox, might have been the TDC sensor.

sorry should have also said, gave issues with dodgey starting and acted as if the immobaliser wasnt kicking out.

Immobiliser issues and generally electrical faults are common too.

Had both a 172 and a 172 cup modified. I had problems with the standard rear dampers they don't last long. The engine mountings also were faulty. Not really much else went wrong with them. The PH1 have a few airbag issues with the light coming on from time to time. I aslo had a factory recall on the bonnet for the cup.

I had a 182, loved it.

As already said, Cambelt is must, every 5 years or 72,000 miles. Also AUX belt and tensioners (32k or 3 years, if this goes can wipe out the cambelt) Dephaser should also be checked for play and replaced (most people replace dephaser with cambelt + tensioners)

Top mounts caused steering to creak on full lock on mine, modified by renault and all good again. Standard exhaust rusted through, and had to have the cat replaced due to it cracking.
