Gti6 Sensors For Oil And Water Temp With 205 Dash

Recommended Posts

Mad Scientist

I am struggling to get readings on the 205 dash for water and oil temperature with the GTI6 sensors. I was going to put the 205 oil temp sensor in the sump, but its a different thread. I don't have a 205 water temp sensor ATM.

Anyone got them working? Tips please.

Thanks,

Pete

It's straight forward enough

On the oil temp sensor, one pin connects to the 205 wiring and is grounded through the sump. The other pin is unconnected.

On the coolant temp sensor, one pin is for the gauge, and one pin is for the warning light. Both earth through the engine block.

How do I go about working out which pin is which Anthony?

Electrics is not my strong point!

Thanks.

Do you havethe connectors that plug onto the sensors still on the loom?

If so it would be the coloured wire that needs to be used wouldn't it Anthony?

No you wolly because I made the whole loom didn't I!

The colours are according to what I robbed from the S16 donor loom!

Doh!

Will spade connectors fit on them?

Don't you have the s16 loom?

Think I may have a 6 loom in the garage that you can butcher!

wiring diagrams are like trying to understand a woman!

You think your getting somewhere then bang you've got your wires crossed and costs you a small fortune to sort out!

I always use the 205 water sensors on the engine, Give's a better reading if you can call the guess 'O' meters that good, As the Brown and Blue connectors are not really used so it's a easy fix

If you've got a multimeter it's easy to work out

Coolant temp sensor - the pin with a resistance around 2k* to the metal part of the sensor body is for the gauge, and the pin that is open circuit (ie infinite resistance) to the metal body is the warning light

Oil temp sensor - the pin with a resistance around 2k* to the metal part of the sensor body is for the gauge, and the other pin that is open circuit is not used.

If you've not got a multimeter, then either double check on something like Autodata (which I don't have on this laptop, otherwise I'd quickly check for you) or just use trial and error - you've a 50% chance of getting it right, and it won't do any harm if you get it wrong, they just won't work.

* - that's at ambient temperature. If you test them on a hot engine, the resistance will be lower.

That's brill Anthony. I will do just that. However, given that neither are working ATM, I guess they both need swapping around.

MILES: I robbed a sensor from SorrentoPete and put that in the place of the brown water sensor which I didn't need. Trouble is, we didn't know if it was for the gauge or the light!

WELSHPUG: A wiring diagram is completely useless in this case, since I have GTI6 sensors, 205 gauges and lights and a custom loom in between. It wouldn't tell me which pin of a 2 pin sensor did which anyway would it.

Thanks for your help.

If it still doesn't work when you swap them over, ground each pin on the wiring connector in turn, which should make the appropriate gauge read max, or make the warning light come on. If it doesn't, suspect wiring issues somewhere.

yes it does.

pin 1, gauge, pin2 switch, blue connector, wire 401 / 400 respectively.

;):P

as for which pin of the plug/sensor is which, they are marked.

I stand corrected! However, the wiring diagram I have is useless so I gave up.

Also seems I will need to look for a magnifying glass to assist my ageing eyes in seeing the numbers on the sensor. I'll get to Ebay right away!

Many thanks.

Ahhhh now.......that is the ticket!

I have all new aftermarket plugs and have never seen the OE ones, but from those pictures I can see which pin is which now!

Thanks very much.
