Whats Wrong With This One? Only Starts When Cold.

starnge problem here, mayb not for some but ive not come across it before,

its a 2.1 turbo diesel but i am running a bosh pump on it, its been fine for years but then it just wouldnt start one day after a drive,

next morning started fine took it a small drive 1-2 miles turned it off, then after 10 sec tryd to start it again and it just turns over and over.

sounds exactly the same as always when turning over just dosent start,

let it cool down and it starts perfect, drives perfect is great, but as soon as you turn it off it wont start again.

ive took the stop solinoid out to elimate that as a problem, thought it may be sticking when hot for some reeason but it never made any odds.

it is a high milage engine 246k so compresion jumped to minfd but it starts fine cold and drives perfect untill you turn it off.

any ideas?

it cant be eletrical as theres none needed on this car as ive removed solinois.

checked timing and its fine.

thanks for any input

I had a similar hot start issue on an impreza I used to own. It was down to a faulty temp sensor

If you turn it off and immediately restart it, does it fire up OK then?

Do the glow plugs receive power when trying to start it warm? Could be the heat is causing the glow plug relay problems, which would only be an issue when trying to start it once the chamber/plug has cooled down rather than when the engine is running, as I'm guessing that an old-tech diesel - particularly if it is getting a bit worn and low on compression - is going to need the glow plugs even with the engine still warm.

no as long as you wait long enough for the engine to stop rotating it wont start.

glow plugs fine as starts great when cold, they also recive power when warm yes.

but ive started this engine before with no glow plug realy and it chuged a bit but wasnt too bad.

im going to take it a drive get it warmed up then pour cold water over the pump to cool it down and see if it starts then,

not to shure why i think that will help but hey ho

When it won't start warm try a seperate wire to the stop solenoid & see if it starts.

If thats the problem iirc the feed to the stop solenoid comes via the glow plug relay.
