Just About To Leave 205-dom

Hi all.

I agreed a sale of my GTI on Saturday, the chap is coming along with the funds later today. It's tinged with sadness as I've spent a lot of time and effort to get it where it is today, he getting a good car and I'm getting a fair price.

Anyway, I'll be lurking around keeping up with things from time to time. I have already been caught looking at GTI's for sale but I am VERY tempted by a Clio Williams, I may also consider a 106 GTI, 106 Rallye - so I'll probably end up with a 3rd 205 GTI however.!!!!! :)

What's your thoughts on my 'alternatives' out of interest?

Anyway, thanks for the chat, advice - 100% the best forum out there - keep up the good work everyone.

See you about. ;)

I have always considered getting my hands on a BMW 635csi - although I'm not sure it would suit me as I'm not a drug dealer.

I'll need to get something quickly as I'll just snap up the next decent 205 I see, funds permitting of course.!!

Clio Williams

106 Rallye S1

106 GTI S2

I'm hoping to get one of the above and pocket some cash, but there's nothing much available locally. I travelled to Birmingham for my last 205 GTI but I'm not keen on that again, TBH.

Anyway if anyone can recommend any of the above (or not) then I'd be interested to hear.

It could be your lucky day, I'm coming to Edinburgh tomorrow in my 1.9 Gti and you can buy that from me for £1600.00, it's the sorrento green one in the for sale. section.

These 205's are hard to get away from, I was busy saving for a golf R32 and was aiming to buy one in January but realised it just wasn't going to be satisfying at all with all it's electrical trickery and vw reliability so I came to my senses and bought something I really did want, a lovely 205 dimma that will make me much happier than any modern car!

Im a lover of french hot-hatches and i own a s1 106 XSI (1.6l model) well it's the misses chuck horsey stuff in the back, car but i love ragging it about, a phase 2 R5 GT Turbo and a Phase 1 205 1.9 GTI,

I had a look at the Clio Williams but i was put off buy the fact that they drink oil and the bodywork seems to deteriorate worse than dare i say it the R5 GTT's also some work to be carried out costs a fortune if you haven't got the facilities to do it yourself, for example engine has to be dropped out to do a cambelt and renault charge 350+vat and that was 5 or six years ago so way more by now and to chang the aux belt you need to remove the bonnet and front headlight to squeeze your hands down in the packed engine bay ! And the only model to find if you were going to have is the mk1 Clio Williams due to the classic appeal about and less electrical stuff to go wrong than the later mk2 and 3's as they have the sunroof (always rust and leak) power steering (very dodgy and expensive job to change a fubar'd one) and electrical goodies (not that good when they have a mind of there own)

I love the s1 106 rallye but finding one thats not been abused is rare as rocking horse poo !! as most get chav'd up and the IDIOTS who put the gti lump in them and instantly demolish the price tag by doing so !!! They are an absolute thrill a minute to drive with the rev it and rag it 1.3l engine !!! and need to be driven like you nicked it to get the best from the car !!!

Again you cant go wrong with the 106 GTI's but you again need to find a well looked after, none chav'd up one.

Your best bet is to go for the rallye or the gti but if you can try and find the later phase 2 rallye as again a good fun motor to drive and a bit more modern looking.

Hope this helps ?

Never been a fan of 106's as my size 13 feet don't get on well with the stupid pedals, same when I drove a friends Spaxo. 106 S1 Rallye are freakin cool though! I also think the clio williams are very cool cars

Same boat...205-less and own a Williams. I weighed them up and plumped for the Renault.

A very very good handling car, I was lucky enough to pick up a 54k Williams 2 which the previous owner had spent nigh on 5k on.

Arches were tickety boo, but after a winter of salted roads and I must say me taking care to rinse it well on a regular basis, they've bubbled up pretty badly and I'm looking at about a grand to repair it right, not a piss poor rub down and blow over that many seem to do.

Check and prospective one for play in the steering, but an easy fix if you know someone handy with a MIG. The oil thing is mostly it disappearing into the plugs from a dodgey gasket in the rocker cover. They also have damn noisey PAS pumps. Ideally mine needs replaced.

Get a good 'un you'll enjoy it and the forum is www.williamsclio.co.uk - a bit crap and they want you to pay £11 a year to access their premium section - total rip off and contains little of interest. If there's anything you might be interested in there then gimme a pm and I'll forward you the relevant info.

the later mk2 and 3's as they have the sunroof (always rust and leak)

MK2's don't have a sunroof.

Oh go on then - only a ferry ride away from Edinburgh (and originally a Glasgow car) with a good offer, who knows...

Firstly, thanks for the replies - that gives me a lot of food for thought. I was soooo keen on a Williams Clio, I almost got a MK1 for £1200 but maybe it was a lucky escape. Rupertfinch I'd be interested to know how much a good offer is? Out of interest I bought a BMW 118d in Belfast in May, so have done the whole Ireland thing. I suspect if you get rid of the Williams you might be back for a 205, yeah?

Glad to hear the S1 Rallye is a good fun to drive as it is to look at, I wish there was one local, I've seen one but it's 180 miles away.

There is a very original 106 GTI down the road, so if I get some more good comments I may take a closer look.

That flaming Williams itch will not go away though........ :)

s1 rallye in standard form bar a k&n panel filter was the most day to day fun ive had in a warm pug.

The 205 is more exciting and faster etc but the little s1 engine is a joy and the inlet sounds awesome once on cam a truly great drive - 16v ruins them imo.

If it was Grey, White or Silver heck even Miami I'd probably take it, but I'm just not a Sorrento fan unfortunately.

begs the question if you want to buy another, why bother selling the one you have?

Yup, it's ridiculously easy to get to and fro here, I don't know why others don't do it more often, some cracking roads.

TBH, I paid 3k for the Williams as I was looking for one with low miles and a loads of history, granted that seems steep, but it was originally on pistonheads for 5k - some people just seem to make up prices. The whole 1,2,3 Williams doesn't bother me, so perhaps I overpaid. But my understanding is that the 2 offers the best comromise, with the issues of the 1 being ironed out before the flabbiness of the 3 came along. The again I'm biased. Shame you don't live closer as you'd be welcome to have a test drive.

I think the 1200 pound one may have been a lucky escape, but then again who knows. They really do handle well!!!

I'll be back in a 205 eventually, but I think I need to scratch my Lancia itch and have my eye on a 1976 fulvia! I'll welcome the galvanised Pug body with open arms after owning an Italian motor I fear.

What about a racing Puma, now they're interesting?

Mark.

I highly recommend a 106 GTi. I have owned one for the last 10 years and the performance and handling never fails to amaze me, awesome looks too :)

Well I fancy a change something a bit safer/modern to cart the youngsters about in at weekends, but if a bargain 205 came up I'd consider it.

I've had 2 now but I'd never rule out a 3rd, I'd ideally like 1 that was mechanically sound but needed cosmetics doing, so I could justify nice fresh dent free paintwork, my last one was good and original bodywise but the daft dings, etc wound me up a bit but it would have been a shame to paint it. I got a good price and it gives me some options when choosing the next 'hot/warm hatch'

I'm not convinced I've done the right thing myself, but it's only a car...... :)

That's 2 Puma recommendations, I'm getting very worried........

I've never liked the look of them, only fords I really like are old skool escorts, cortinas and fiestas - I had a Mk2 escorts when I passed my test. Loved that car.

Interesting that the 106 GTI is getting the thumbs up, I always remember them getting good press back in the late 90's

Clio Williams are made from rust, 106 gti's are mostly chavved to hell and 106 Rallye's are pretty rare and fragile, guess what i've decided to do?

Didn't take too long, got myself another Gti a very original 1989 1.9 this time. 1 previous owner, owned by an 85 year old guy who has documented it's whole history, I have a file full of receipts. It was a very pampered Gti but it's been used not over cherished. Garaged from new.

Was delighted to see it parked up at the guys house on Google Maps. It made the 435 mile journey home without any mishaps.

Only real plans are to tidy up bits of bodywork, interior source an original stereo and enjoy and care for it like it's previous owner obviously did.

I'm glad to be back. So far............

Thanks very much, I think I've done alright with this one. I stuck my neck out a bit, flew down to Gatwick at 5am then drove her home 7 hours solid (bar a couple of fuel stops) I'm glad my gamble paid off.

She's not perfect but the history and the 1 mature owner should make it a sound purchase. It has had so much spent on it over the years (going on the receipts) must be in the region of £8 - £10k. Things like air flow meter, rear beam stuff, service after service. Apparently the guy was in the oil industry and changed the oil every 5,000 miles - it even has a note in the engine bay detailling when it was last done along with the filter changes!!!!

Will post a few pics shortly.

Very nice mate. Glad your gamble of travelling bloody miles to get it paid off. Looks like it just needs some new badges. Are those siem driving lights or non standard driving lights?

Siem driving lights. One was seriously squint after a minor front end knock, I have straightened it now. One is on upside down and they could do with a little clean up.

If I'm being picky I need a new grille and possibly a valance but it's not a pressing issue, it's quite presentable as it is. Will get to these things if I ever get some time to myself, 2nd child is due tomorrow, doubt I'll see it for ages.....!!!!
