Identifying Which 1.6 Engine

Hi I have a Oct 1986 registered 1.6 GTI how can I tell if it has the 105 bhp or 115 bhp engine fitted?

A usual tale-tale is that the 115hp engine has a breather on the cam cover, whereas the 105hp engine doesn't.

 

If it's still present, check the engine code on the block, just above the alternator

105hp XU5J engine - 180A

115hp XU5JA engine = B6D and B6E

To add to that, the B6D is the earlier of the 115bhp engines, 9.8 (? or thereabouts) compression ratio, the B6E is the later 1600 engine with 9.25:1 compression.

No, but the engine plate can be seen from the top without removing anything.

B6E engines are quite late IME, '91>.

Did the late 1600's have cats fitted? I wondered if this change was for cat equipped cars.

I don't think so, 1.6's were made/reg'd until mid (Jul/Aug) '92 so missed out.

 

My K plate was registered early Aug'92 and never had one.

1.6 gti never had a cat, though the monopoint XU5M did.
