they are all XU engines.

you have an alloy 1905cc Mi16 83mm bore 88mm stroke, 160 bhp D6C/XU9J4, and a lower compression Cat equipped 148 bhp DFW/XU9J4Z

Also have an iron block 1998 cc MI16 86x86, which is called an S16 when its found in a 306, engine code RFY/XU10J4, 155 bhp.

the head casting is essentially identical on both, with several small detail differences.

a gti6 shares the same block and crank as the iron block Mi16/S16, 167 bhp with a different head, its an RFS/XU10J4RS

lots more between them, like engine management, inlet and exhaust manifolds and compression ratios.

A few minutes using the search function will reveal a mountain of information.

The codes for the three engines are XU9J4 (1.9 Mi16), XU10J4 (2.0 Mi16/S16) and XU10J4RS (GTi-6) which might help with searches <_<

i beleve that the 2.0l mi16 is the s16 block, same as gti6. heads are different. mi16 has acav. 1.9 mi16 is alloy block, lighter and more powerful then the cast block one.

why do you ask?

you could have found that out by searching. it annoys people on here cluttering up the forum

Just so there's no misunderstanding, while the gti6 block is essentially the same cast iron 2-litre unit, the internals aren't the same as the S16 - the rods are a higher spec and slightly longer, and the pistons have a lower compression height to make up for it. Cranks are the same dimensionally (in terms of throw), I assume they are similar if not identical specs.... don't know for sure...

same part number for all the 2.0 XU cranks bar the 405 T16

RFY pistons are flat topped but sit below deck, under a circa 40cc chamber in the head, 10.4-1 compression ratio.

nice meaty valve cutouts in these, so initial cam upgrades are quite straightforward.

whilst the RFS come right up to deck height and have a very slight dish and sit under a circa 37cc chamber, and run a 10.8-1 compression ratio.

these have very small valve cutouts in the piston crowns, so a right pain in the arse to upgrade cams, most aftermarket mild cams aren't safe to use, especially if the head has been off and skimmed.

Well by the sound of it there pretty similar then, i did do a search. Im finding it hard to find a gti6 engine and mi16 are rare to find in a car and expensive, but ive found a s16 close by. Just wondering which one was better.

Thanks for the information.

Iain - Asking in the wanted section on here should bring up a gti6 from a forum member or two.

Send me a text about tomorrow, I've got the guy from Virgin coming sometime between 8-12, but will be in the garage the rest of the afternoon.

Yeah, but someone like Al or Baz may have all of the goodies you want/need. Engine/Rack/Brakes, saves you the time on breaking the car.
