Head Gasket?

Recommended Posts

cheesegrater

Hi all after an amazing week...I think my head gaskets gone. There's a lot of oily looking water originating from the rear between the head and block. The oil is all mayoy and the water is lower than normal. Compression seems fine all running at 10bar. Anything else it could be? Found my knocking noise on the bright side.

If its a later model with a water/oil cooler that is worth checking before the HG. That wont explain anything down the back of the engine though, just mixing oil and water.

Yeah really sorry about that mate as I'm having a right old time ATM. It's a B6D so no oil cooler. I hope it's not cracked I'll be less than happy.

There's one nice trick in order to see if it's a head gasket or cracked liner/head .. but you'll need :

- air compressor

- tyre inflator gun

- 1 male coupler plug

- an piece of rubber piping

- 2 jubilee clips

- compression tester hose

.. first , need to prepare "the tool" : undo the valve out from the compression tester hose (it's usually threaded inside the bottom of the hose , use small flat screwdriver to turn & undo it ...) , then remove the hose from the tyre inflator gun and insert a male coupler plug in the gun , slide an piece of rubber piping onto the coupler plug end on the air gun side , add jubilee clip and tight it , then all you need to do is to connect the rubber pipe from the air gun onto the compression tester hose - again , slide the rubber pipe onto the compression tester hose , add jubilee clip and you're ready :)

Now , heat the engine up to the operating temp , switch off , remove the spark plugs (i prefer to do them one by one during the testing , cos the air can't spin the engine as easily while 3 of them are still inside ..) , bring the piston on the TDC of compression stroke , connect "the tool" i.e. thread and tighten the compression tester hose inside the spark plug hole , remove the cap from the expansion tank (fill it up till the top with water) and apply/fill air inside the cylinder - if you have a bad head gasket or crack in the liner/head , if it's really bad - it'll push the water out from the expansion tank when you fill the affected cylinder with air ... if it's not as bad , you'll see bubbles coming out from the bottom of the expansion tank ...

(you'll need to lock the crank as the air usually forces the piston down when you apply it inside the cylinder , so jam the screwdriver on the flywheel ring in order to lock the engine with the piston @ TDC )

It may sound a bit silly  but this "thing" works  ... can make a photo of this "the tool" if needed ?! but it's basically very simple and effective ..

Put that chemical on top of the header tank and it went yellow :)

Got the bits just got to make the time to strip it down.
