205 Gti-6

Recommended Posts

always loved 205's, had lot's of 1.6,1.9s track cars etc dont like mi's, selling the escos to fund home extension, want another 205 to use on track, looking for more power than 1.9s, seen a few with gti-6 and 205 turbo cars, love turbos but don't like cost of running on track,

so whats needed for a gti6 conversion and what to look out for if buying one already converted

cheers

Buy one ready done as there are hundreds about and they are always for sale on Pistonheads. Stripped track ones are usually cheaper as they are less practical, but often change hands more often. Look for one without the 6 gearbox ideally as it impacts the steering lock. Shell condition is key and quality of wiring. Check when the tensioners and cam belt has been done as they can fail early on 6 engines and the pistons are quite soft.

Have to disagree there unless your lucky, Most are just bodged together on the cheap with tilted engine's and iffy wiring to name a few so play huge attention to this when looking, Even allot of so called specialists are allot to be disired.

Starting from scratch is cheaper than sorting one out in the long term

I guess the problem with buying a conversion is it's a hugely unknown quantity, and what makes sense and is safe to one person might be the complete opposite to someone else. Unless you're willing to spend decent money and REALLY do you homework you might be happier with building on yourself.

I reckon a full convo can be done for about a grand, but that's assuming a decent base - ie good brakes and suspension - and TBH the methods are largely agreed upon nowadays - bend the manifold, shim the master cylinder, etc etc.

Certainly better value buying one already done, but who knows what you might need to spend down the line.

As Baz has said, Most (not all) tend to eat shafts for a past time and the engine was designed to sit at the std angle and not being tilted and when you can do this with ease I cannot see why they should be tilted

Tell tell signs is the lower fork being welded up and the exhaust manifold being standard.

Hey,

iirc, there's no tilting needed.

Mine sat at standard angle, nothing touched anywhere re: engine mounts...

Only mod was auto bonnet, and shaved rocker cover.

that was a long time ago though........damn I miss that car:(((

All the bits you need to install a 6 engine can be bought off here

Converted engine looms - spikey

Re-angled exhaust manifolds - miles

Coolant hoses - BBM

Thermostat adapters - BBM

Unlocked ECUs if you don't get one with the engine

Then all the info on everything else you need to know can be found iqung the search function

i'd prefer to buy one already converted as i'm one of the people who get bored with projects and wouldn't finish it,

is there any other problems with engine being tilted,

i'll take a look through the rebuilds on here

cheers

I see on your first post that you don't like Mi's? Any reason why?

Surely any GTi6 engine is getting a bit leggy by now, and may require a rebuild of sorts. I certainly would for my own peace of mind. I know its more expense but surely better in the long-term.

The only advantage of the 6 engine is the management, Other than that I don;t think it's that good in a 205 at all, the Mi is much better but then you've got 20 year old tech running it and a Dizzy which is now a major downside unless you upgrade but this adds a good £1000.00 to the install.

Very true and it's something I'm deliberating at the moment (management that is).

I just think the Mi16 has the character to go with a 205GTi, the GTi6 I drove the other felt 'dull' in comparison to mine.

alan-m, surely if the gti6 is leggy and needs some rebuilding then the same if not more can be said about mi's. i know both are good but purely thinking ahead and sorting a car that will last the next few years with parts still readily available,

"dull" as a gti6 is it'll still be quicker, unless you find a particularly healthy MI16.

I have never driven a 205 with a GTI6 or an MI, have driven a 306GTI though. The reasons I am choosing a GTI6 is as it is not only more powerful and quicker, but a much more modern engine and theres no smoke without fire reference oil surge!

Cheers, Ali

My old Mi16 was miles quicker than the gti6 engine conversion I carried out. The gti6 engine was in good nick too with only 22k bottom end and a newly rebuilt head. The 205 suits the lighter engine IMO, thats why i'm going back to 1900 8v power.

The mi16 definitely suits a 205 better, having owned two good mi16's and a good gti6 i found the 6 a bit quicker (all on 1.6 boxes).

If you go for one already converted make sure its done right. I paid a so called pro to install mine and its been a complete f up. I now have to have it all done again. I gave the twat all the info from here, all the right bits and he shoved the engine in. It was so bad it did not run right and the master cylinder wore a hole in the cam cover in 6 rally stage miles. Also lots of bits were knackerd ie f uped injectors, hole in throttle body and the engine tilted to the side. On of the things i can not for give is he left a leaking water pump and as he changed the cam belt with the engine out he had no excuse . O and he did not fit a new tensioner. Plus lots of other things, i use to trust this monkey to look after my rally car but no more. He charged me nearly £700 for this s*it job and i supplied all the parts. This was a so called mechanic so beware!
